what position did you give birth in?

I gave birth on all fours, and I stood up and walked around for most of my labour. I just felt that the pain was 100 times worse when I sat or laid down, and it just felt natural to deliver on all fours.

Just wondering if I am a minority, as all those on OBEM seem to be on their backs, and in bed throughout the labour, and friends in RL all seem to have been on their backs..

Nah, I was same as you- upright or squatting.

They come out quicker that way.Grin

2 on my back in the bed & 3rd in the birth pool.

Timeoutofmind · 14/03/2012 22:16

Thats what I always thought. I keep screaming at the telly 'just get out of bed'! Grin

Flat on back with knees by my ears. Loved it - it was the position I could really really give it some welly. And I needed to as the child needed turning from back to back.

I was really active in labour but could only bear that position for pushing. I'd have punched anyone who tried to move me Smile

2tired2bewitty · 14/03/2012 22:20

on my back, legs in stirrups, Dh and one midwife pushing my legs back towards my stomach, another midwife leaning on my stomach to tell me when I was having a contraction. Definitely not as advertised in my NCT class!

greensnail · 14/03/2012 22:20

One lying on my side, one lying on my back (although I'd been kneeling on the bed leaning over the back until the last couple of pushes).

Flisspaps · 14/03/2012 22:22

In the OBEM position.

I was however induced and had an epidural and had a forceps birth, so it may have been awkward to use the forceps if I had stayed on the gym ball.

In fact, a standard OBEM birth, it would seem.

On all fours until I got in the pool, then in a really deep squat.

bramblina · 14/03/2012 22:25

On my knees, hanging over the back of the raised bed, with both dcs, just as I thought I would. Fabulous.

vodkalorange · 14/03/2012 22:25

On my back with two people rummaging around in my guts...

vodkalorange · 14/03/2012 22:26

But OBEM is so hung up on the births being 'decorous'...

VickityBoo · 14/03/2012 22:27

Lol vofkalorange I was just reading and wasn't going to comment but your comment made me Grin

Mine was the same!

lambethlil · 14/03/2012 22:30

coconutty I sat up too with DD1, it was very fast.

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 14/03/2012 22:31

I was on all fours for my first and kneeling for DD2

LST · 14/03/2012 22:32

On my back. Was the best position. I tried every other position but just couldn't do it!

Stood by the side of the bed, had been on the ball for most of my labour, stood to push, 3rd push had lo leap on the bed as she was coming out and managed to make it in time for her to land with a thud on the bed!

My daughter knows how to make an entrance Grin. Almost had to pick the midwife up off the floor she got such a shock!!

I had both of mine on all fours, any other position was awful. First one was in a hospital not happy with being mobile during labour, wanted me on my back and DH had to have argument with MWs about it.
Second time in a different hospital and I was encouraged to move around and being on all fours was 'allowed'. Its so much easier to have a baby when they let you be in a position that is comfortable without having to have an argument!

BlueEyeshadow · 14/03/2012 22:40

Wanted to be mobile but DS2 was sitting on a nerve so legs wouldn't work! (DS1 was ELCS) So I ended up in the bed, but not flat - MW got it as upright as possible and then helped me turn onto my side right at the end. V effective.

urbanturban · 14/03/2012 22:40

DD1, epidural, flat on my back, in theatre, Keillands rotational forceps . She was back to back and not moving after a 30 hour labour and over an hour of pushing.....
DD2, on my knees, kneeling up leaning over the back of the bed ......much comfier, if a bit of a shock as she was born twenty mins after we arrived at hospital!

ZuleikaJambiere · 14/03/2012 22:43

No 1 on my back, hooked up to a monitor, drip and epidural.

No 2 in a pool, sort of floating on my side.

For both, I couldn't keep still during contractions, until I got on the monitor/in the pool, and marched round and round the room. I was tired but my body couldn't handle taking a rest
