The registrar is suggesting that I may need an early (37/38 wk) induction, should they confirm I have pre-eclampsia or a possible liver function problem.

This is really the one thing I was keen to avoid and it terrifies me. I'd rather have a caesarian (a whole other thread - let's not go there!).

The registrar is suggesting induction by either breaking my waters if the cervix looks favourable or a pessary (but they aren't keen on a pessary for the same reasons as me - the result is unpredictable - could be fine, could be way too intense). My concerns are that the baby just won't be ready to labour, even if it is mature enough, meaning a long labour and clock watching or a distressed baby; that I won't be able to labour at home (am finding the hospital environment horrible already) or move around/use the pool/TENS as they will want to monitor me; that as a result I'll end up on my back with an epidural and a forceps delivery (risk of being ripped to shreds based on many friends' experiences) and/or EMCS (so why not just go straight for an ELCS and cut the stress out of the process for both the baby and me?).

So, please, tell me that an early induction doesn't have to be this way!

hi - its a while ago now (14 years) but i had an induced birth with my first as they found out at 36 week scan that she was very small & probably had stopped growing - anyway they waited till 38 weeks then went for it as there were no signs of lnatural labour. it wasn't that bad - started about 10am with the pessary then hanging about for a few hours for some signs of labour then confined to bed with an epidural for rest of time - actual labour probably about 4 hours - baby arrived 8pm. all was well & i found it ok. i just went along with what they said. i had 3 weeks in hospital in total - 2 weeks before birth & 5 days after as she was tiny so i was quite institutionalised by the end. anyway i would always chose a natural birth if at all possible - you cant beat that feeling when you've done it ! - they hand you the baby & its all worthwhile. good luck
