When did your periods return?

Sorry if this is TMI -
DD1 is almost 13wks old, I bf her for 10 weeks but have now stopped (no judgement please) - I still haven't had a period but I have been having a lot of mucus-y type discharge. Is it normal to go this long without periods returning?
Thanks

I don't think there is much of a normal - seems to vary enormously.

I was in different situation to you as I breastfed to 13 months, and my periods came back after almost exactly a year. But amongst people I know varied from 6 months to 2years (most of these bf or mix feeding). I don't think 13weeks is very long tbh.

I'd enjoy it if I were you (unless you are desperate to conceive again this early?!) - I've only had 1 period in the last 28months now (pregnant again after 1st period after DD) and I really do not miss them :-)

I cut back hugely on breastfeeding around 3 months, and stopped totally by 6 months and didn't have periods for months, while some of my friends who exclusively breastfed got their periods back much earlier. From my highly scientific anecdotal sample, it seems they vary hugely and aren't necessarily related to how much you breastfeed.

I breastfed until 6 months (not exclusively), then period came back exactly 6 weeks after I stopped. Was kind of surprised that it didn't come back earlier but I guess I was breastfeeding regularly so I think this held it off longer... Yes, can really vary so much between women!

Yeah I bf exclusivley for 5 months started weaning at this point as ds was ready. Carried on bf until 13 months but periods came back after 6 months was very disapointed as I know loads that don't get them till after they have completely stopped feeding. Just luck of the draw I guess!

I BF for 6 months, but period returned just 10 weeks after giving birth :( The first one was prettttty bad, so be prepared! (although friends have reported that their first one was just like before they became pg).

Don't worry, your body knows what it's doing and things will return to normal soon. As Mackrelmint said - enjoy it while it lasts!

DS is almost 7 months old now and mine still haven't returned.

I'm still expressing milk for him 3 -5 times a day so don't know if that's delaying things.

herethereandeverywhere · 10/03/2012 22:39

I gave up bf at 6 months but had been dropping feeds since 3 months. Periods didn't come back for another 2 months (DD was 8 months old).

ReshapeWhileDamp · 11/03/2012 10:59

You've only had three weeks since stopping BF, so don't worry! Smile I'd bet they'll come back in the next couple of weeks. The mucussy stuff could be ovulation-related cervical mucus, which, if so, means your body is already getting back on track.

With DS1, I bf for two years but periods came back at 7 months, probably because he was taking in a lot of solid food from 6 months (and therefore less milk). With DS2, I'm breastfeeding him at 14 months and they still haven't returned, but I'm also cosleeping and this might be making the difference.

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 11/03/2012 11:07

With dc1 I expressed and periods returned at 5 weeks, with dc2 they returned once I stopped feeding on demand through the night at 6ish months.

With DS I breastfed exclusively until 6-7 months, before introducing solid food. My period didn't return until he was 10 months. We co-slept though so there was a fair amount of night-feeding still going on. I think it really varies from woman to woman.

seoladair · 11/03/2012 19:11

I'm still partly breast-feeding my 10 month old, but my periods unfortunately came back 8 weeks post-partum. They have been relentlessly regular ever since (but painless - I never had bad period pain, but since having my baby, I haven't had even a twinge of period pain, so at least that's something.)

There was a lady in my local group who was breast-feeding a 9-month old, and was also 4 months pregnant! She became pg whilst exclusively breast-feeding, so it can happen!
