What did you eat during labour?

...I've been reading advice and there's lots of people saying "dried apricots and bananas".

I hate bananas and apricots don't float my boat, either...I'd rather have a snickers and a chicken sandwich any day! Maybe a cereal bar or 2...Not too healthy though - and nothing terribly complex about the carbs in that lot!

But then I've not been through labour yet (35 weeks) so who knows what I'll fancy when I'm there.

So - what were your top labour snacks?

I wasnt allowed to eat - I think its in case you need an emergency c-section and you shouldnt eat before surgery

melliebobs · 05/03/2012 12:23

well as i'm still waiting i don't know if i'll even want to eat. But just incase i've packed a variety of stuff to cover my basis.

Go ahead cereal bars (the ones that are kind of like a garibaldi (sp?) )
Haribo (the sour ones)
Dried Strawberries (mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm)
Flapjacks
Gonna throw in some apples last minute
Glucose tablets

Fluid wise Lucazade and a bottle of ribena to flavour minging hospital water

HappyAsEyeAm · 05/03/2012 12:28

Milky bar! It was all I felt like. But when I wasn't dilatinga s fast as is to eb expected, I was told to stop eating and drinking anything at all, as an EMCS was a possibility.

I didn't eat anything. I can't remember being forbidden like Seona, but your normal bodily functions kind of shut down so it seems perfectly reasonable to go 36 8 hours without food, I don't remember wanting anything.

The hospital provided very welcome tea and toast afterwards

Pascha · 05/03/2012 12:30

Nothing, just lots and lots of water. I had no prolonged waiting around though, first contraction to delivery in 7 hours.

MrsJohnDeere · 05/03/2012 12:30

Nothing. Had no inclination to eat at all (but did have quick labours, 5 hours and 1 hour).

ladywithnomanors · 05/03/2012 12:31

Nothing. I couldn't think of anything worse!
I just drank lots of water and had tea and toast afterwards.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/03/2012 12:32

A full size Cadburys Easter egg and 2 cheese sandwichs. Think I had a bag of mini eggs as well.

TimothyClaypoleLover · 05/03/2012 12:43

Didn't eat anything during established labour. Just didn't feel hungry. MW tried to get me to eat some toast but only managed a couple of mouthfuls and DH polished the rest off. Was in hospital 12 hours before DD was born and didn't eat a thing.

At home before going up to the hospital I managed to force a bagel down but it was almost like my body wasn't interested in eating and focuses entirely on how to get baby out.

Pajamas · 05/03/2012 12:44

A few grapes and some chunks of melon went down very well - I wasn't exactly hungry, but that provided some welcome refreshment between contractions.

CuppaTeaJanice · 05/03/2012 12:47

I got through nearly a whole packet of Sainsburys rocket ice lollies. They melted quite quickly in the hot delivery room but I was still scoffing them when it came time to push! (might have been munching between pushes too, but that memory is a bit hazy)

Flubba · 05/03/2012 12:49

Biscuit Boosts. Mmmmmmmmmmmmh.

Also sent the student doctor over to the shop to buy more when I'd run out Blush :o

I was starving throughout!! :o

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 05/03/2012 12:52

we weren't allowed to eat (i say we, blardy dh was) but i wasn't hungry anyway. having said that, the cup of tea and hospital toast they bring you once it's all done and dusted tastes like the snack of the gods...

ilooklikegrotbagstoday · 05/03/2012 12:56

Lasagne - DON'T DO IT!

A few hours later, in the birthing pool, i puked everytime i had a contraction. DH was having to fish it all out with a little net. Gross!

Laambkins · 05/03/2012 13:05

In the whole 48 hours I ate a corned beef and onion (all held together with tomato sauce) sandwich and a mars bar.

Don't judge me Grin

capecath · 05/03/2012 13:15

In the early stages I had strawberry milk and chocolate :)

OhTheConfusion · 05/03/2012 13:43

I packed belvita breakfast biscuits, apples, raisins, lots of drinks and starbursts. In reality, I ate nothing as I was sick throughout.

Joygirl78 · 05/03/2012 14:08

I ate pasta in early latent stages. Spent most of active labour puking up.

babybouncer · 05/03/2012 14:24

I had a ham roll and salad just beforehand and was violently sick when I went into labour. I didn't touch any of my snacks (but had a lot of water) until the glorious tea and toast afterwards. I would still pack them again, though, as DH was starving and very dehydrated afterwards and ate some on the way home and the rest I had over the next few days in hospital.

Abcinthia · 05/03/2012 14:36

When I started having contractions I had dinner which was quiche, chips, salad and then had Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream afterwards.

In the morning when the contractions were getting worse, I had a chocolate cereal bar.

I was sick after giving birth but that was mainly due to the thermometer being shoved in my mouth. If the midwife had been a bit gentler with it, I don't think I would have thrown up.

Shoutymomma · 05/03/2012 14:48

Walkers ready salted.

notcitrus · 05/03/2012 15:14

First labour - bowl of cereal for breakfast, then lots of chocolate milk, bananas, grapes, water etc in hospital. And then just after birth ended up throwing up everywhere in spectacular fashion...

Second labour - had had cereal at 5am when wasn't sure I was in labour yet. then only water and black sweet tea on advice of MWs and consultants to try and prevent me throwing up.
Gave birth and then spent most of the next 2 hours throwing up said cereal and tea. At least this time staff were prepared as I got through at least 20 of those cardboard bowls!

thing1andthing2 · 05/03/2012 15:14

Had an 8 hour labour. Spent the first 3 hours puking. Then just had sips of water (through a straw - pack some straws!) and dextrose or glucose tablets.
It was overnight (11pm to 7am) so I didn't really feel like eating anyway .

Joygirl78 · 05/03/2012 16:20

No-one offered me tea or toast or anything after :( . Was on ward by about 9.30pm and had to beg for something to eat. Got a measly lunchbox with sad looking cheese sandwich. And next morning 2 measly pieces of toast. I say make sure you pack stuff for after labour rather than during.

TeacupTempest · 05/03/2012 17:51

A tuna sandwich and 2 TUC biscuits.....over about 12 hours. Drank a lot of tea though. The toast afterwards was very welcome!
