Does anyone have experience of childbirth with a fibroid?

At my early scan (6wk) I was found to have a fibroid, no big deal I was told lots of women have them and let's like me don't ever get to know. My mw didn't think anything of it at the booking in appointment and even told me that there was nothing. To prevent me being seen at a mw led unit. Then at my 11 wk scan I'm told that I have to be under consultant led care and my mw should have known this due to fibroid! I was happy enough with that I don't mind seeing a consultant. Then yesterday we went for a NT scan and they made quite a fuss about the fibroid telling me that it's already partially blocking my cervix and in their opinion I won't be able to have a natural birth due to the strong possibility of baby getting stuck. I personally dont mind a C section but Im confused by the mixed messages I'm getting- I have a mw who seems to think all will be ok on its own, then the scan yesterday telling me that I'm at risk of haemorrhaging and having a baby get stuck!! Does anyone have any experience of this problem and how did you get over it?

I had a small one - golf ball sized? I had the same - told I was at risk of bleeding (it wasn't blocking the exit though). In the end I did suffer a PPH but nothing to do with the fibroid (my uterus closed up fine) - it was from a nasty tear and pushing for two hours.

I know someone who had a large one blocking the cervix - she had a c-section. They did monitor it throughout pregnancy - as the uterus expands, some fibroids actually break up, some can stop growing and some cam block the exit.

My MW ended up getting some medical journal out to see what the risks were - it depends on the location (in uterus, on outside etc). See if you can see the consultant and get as much info as you can.

Don't know if this helps, but my mum had multiple fibroids and had 4 normal births.

Prob does depend where/ how big they are. But she is now 63 and has had them at least since she was 30 and no apparent pain/ complications/ anything.

Boggler, looking at fiboid threads and saw this old question- I had fibroid in same position when pg with DS- how is it going?

Boggler · 01/08/2012 13:52

Hi lordflasheart I'd forgotten about this post. I'm now 36 wks and have been monitored throughout due to the fibroid. It grew a bit and is now about 7cm in diameter which seems big to me but my consultant says its not! The Dr thinks I should be ok for a natural birth - but cant be sure that the fibroid wont block the exit. In addition my baby has stubbornly stayed transverse (mw thinks the fibroid is preventing it going head down), so the outcome is that I'm booked for an elcs at 39 weeks, which doesn't bother me a bit as I'd hate to have emcs due to stuck baby etc.

Yes, ecms and stuck baby was what I had, Boggler. 10cm fibroid low down.

Initially they wanted me to try for a vaginal birth because if you have fibroids there is an increased chance of having a heavy bleed during cs. But DS was back to back, and fibroid blocked his exit. So I ended up with emcs.

Glad your having elcs, I think thats the safest outcome for you both- they will be prepared! Good luck, ask them to take the sodding fibroid out when they do it! Grin

lordflasheart hearing your story has made me glad that I've gt an elcs booked, part of me has been wondering if I should try for a natural brth. I'm glad everything turned out ok for you but it must have been exhausting to labour and then have a emcs. I have asked them to take the fibroid away when they do the cs but apparently that a big no no and could lead to a haemorrhage, not sure why but I think it's due to the increased blood supply with being pregnant.
