however long your doctor tells you - do not self-subscribe them

Has someone actually said you need to take them?

I was prescribed them after an EMCS with DS when I lost at least 500ml of blood. I stopped taking them as they seemed to be making him colicky. 7 months on when I stopped b/f my iron levels were fine, probably in part due to having no periods.

Like PP, I was prescribed them after high blood loss with CS. I took them for about 2 months and then got my levels checked at the doctors. Still not back to normal so carried on taking them. I wasn't breastfeeding so had no effect on my daughter.

I lost 2 and a half litres during my ectopic rupture - obviously had a transfusion but took iron tabs for about 2 months after the op'. Was a bit weak for a couple of weeks but fine after that. Obviously not looking after a small child at the same time helped my recovery. Am now 37 weeks with my first and looking at a section as baby is determinedly breech. Think Iron tabs will be the least of my worries! I'm taking the usual mother and baby supplements and will continue to do so whilst breast feeding and most of these contain quite a good dose of iron too dont they?

Hello :) i took them after my c-section because of loss of blood.
I took them until i had terrible side affects and they didnt real do much for my energy or tiredness anyway xx

I never took them after either of my ELCS.

Take them for as long as the doctor says and if you suffer side effects ot they do not seem to be working talk to a doctor (NOT a midwife) and get them changed.

I have takn iron tablets many times in my life, including after losing 2+litres of blood after the first delivery, and found that, s long as I took the right formulation in the right doses I was fine and got better much more quickly. However, none of the midwives I saw ever took me seriously or understood about dosage, side effects and different options available. So, make sure your prescription has been checked by a doctor (don't assume it has been)! Imagine that on leaving hospital after my first delivery they had managed to prescribe only one third of the required dose...
