Going into labour before section date.

Hi. As the title says really. Anyone gone into labour before their section date, what happened? Did they do it fairly quick or were you left to labour for a long time first?

I was worried it would happen to me before my ELCS.

The consultant said that any sign of it starting early I was to call the hospital (to give them the heads up) and go straight up there and they would probably do the CS there and then.

However, my DC2 would have been at risk if my labour had really got going (broken cervix) so they didn't want me contracting for any amount of time.

I did! DD2 was supposed to come on the Tues but the Fri before I started contracting.

Went to the hospital. V flippant dismissive SHO told me to go home and come back when I was contracting 1 in 5, he'd section me then. DH ( a doctor) asked him if he was sure???? Midwife stood behind him mouthing noooooooooo to SHO with an alarmed look on her face!

He walked out the room and they told me they'd hang on to me ( weather also very bad we'd been snowed in that morning).

Got sent upstairs and monitored for about 15 mins before they sent me back to delivery with v reg contractions.

This time the reg saw me and DD2 was born about an hour later by section.

I started contracting a week before my section date. I was flown out (live in a rural area and had to be air lifted to the city) but labour stopped once I arrived in the labour ward. Started again next day and I was monitored before being sectioned within a couple of hours.

Oh, I'm so interested in this- what happens if its an ELCS but no strong medical reason you couldn't have a vb? What then? (Says she of third degree tear.history 31 weeks pg with twins) . Sorry for hijack...

TheToadLessTravelled · 15/02/2012 18:49

I had agreed to a closely monitored trial of labour (with immediate cs if the predicted issues that led to my cs booking arose) if I went into labour before my cs date. Waters broke early but I ended up with an EMCS anyway after full labour and several hours of pushing. Was totally knackered so wish I had just pushed to go straight to section!

Booboostoo · 15/02/2012 18:52

My waters broke a week before my ELCS, I went in and had the CS within a couple of hours.

MrsDobalina · 15/02/2012 19:01

When I was booked for my section they said of I went into labour early there would be no problem, they would just section me early.

Turns out the caveat is how early you go into labour. For prem babies (I went into labour at 34 weeks) outcome is better with a VB so ended up having a VBAC despite all my well laid plans for an ELCS.

dreaming it sounds like you have 2 good reasons for a section, no one surely could argue with that?!

DreamingOfPeace · 15/02/2012 19:58

mrsdobelina they say exactly the same for twins though- depends when you go into labour and under 35 weeks they want me to have a vb as better for babies, like you say... I just worry I'll go into labour between 35 and 37+6 when its booked for and get pushed into a vb as they're both head down (totally ungrateful I know, many twin mums are desperate to have head down babies and have a vb, but I'm bricking it!!). How was the VBAC?

MrsDobalina · 15/02/2012 21:44

VBAC was actually fine and unbelievably fast (but I think that's cos I was sick at the time DD couldn't wait to get of my toxic body). But I did only have one to get out mind! My pelvic floor isn't too happy now but that's another matter!

Good luck all of you pregnant ladies Smile

AlpinePony · 16/02/2012 05:05

Same as mrsdobelina, I 'agreed' to attempt vbac before 37 weeks hedging my bets that my body were unlikely to spontaneously go in to labour before that date, and - if it were - then it might actually have a clue what to do.

Spent the last week avoiding curry ;) but was told if things had kicked off to go in immediately for "hurried elcs".
