Induction tomorrow

First ever post so hope I'm doing this right.
My DD was born 9 days early in 3 hours flat, unplanned home birth, no pain relief and quite a shock - but in retrospect I was lucky to be so quick.

2nd time round looks to be very different. Am now 41+12 and booked for induction tomorrow night. Feel frustrated that I could pop a baby out so fast before, but now may get stuck in a long slow labour on a ward. Have a few questions about induction and wondered if anyone could possibly help with them:

  1. Why have they booked me to come in at 9pm? (with first pessary at midnight) Seems unnecessarily brutal to keep you up all night?
  2. Also doesn't this risk my husband missing the birth? We've been told he has to leave by 9pm and that he can only return if/when I'm transferred to labour ward in the night. But given my history of precipitate labour, I have a hunch that - once my waters have gone - it could be 20 mins flat to deliver. We live 30mins away from the hospital. Neither of us can stand the thought of him missing it, but equally sitting round all night in a draughty waiting rm or frozen car seems awful.
  3. What more can I do to encourage the baby out in the next 30hrs?? I don't have a single twinge, yet I have tried 2 sweeps, acupuncture, sex, curry, pineapple, endless birth ball bouncing... He's obviously not ready but I so wanted a different birth for us both than induction :-(

Thanks for any thoughts.

I'm sorry to hear you're so overdue - I went to 42 weeks with my DS and am so hoping not to repeat the experience this time (am 33 weeks). There's still time for things to kick off naturally, so will keep my fingers crossed!

I think you're right to be concerned about the speed of things with your history of precipitate labour. I know that most inductions, even at about 42 weeks, take hours/days to kick off, but I had one pessary and hyperstimulated immediately. I have been told that this time I should expect a short labour (though no guarantees obviously!). My mother and sisters also have short labours.

My labour still took about 7 hours, as they didn't rupture my membranes until they'd tried and failed to counter-act the hyperstimulation with drugs. Once my waters went I started dilating quite quickly. But I ended up with a crash section due to fetal distress (was lucky enough to have a spinal rather than GA). The trace on my son had been "suspicious" straight away, as he wasn't handling the constant contracting he was experiencing. I had to have CFM and was flat on my back the whole time (and my son was back to back, so even more painful being unable to move in the slightest!). It was a stressful experience, but it turned out well and I am happy with the care I had (as how were they to know I'd react the way I did?).

I don't want to scare you - most inductions are totally fine - but hyperstimulation is definitely something to consider, especially when your history of natural labour is fast and furious.

But I agree that it's odd to have you come in at 9pm/start a pessary at midnight. At my hospital, second and subsequent births are induced first thing in the morning, as they expect them to progress faster.

Remember, you have to consent to everything. So if you want to go in the morning instead of the night before then you can (it's not like they'll refuse to induce you!).

I had to come in the night before but the labour ward was full, so didn't have my pessary until the next morning. With hindsight, I wish I'd just insisted on going home as spent a sleepless night on a horrible ward listening to other women in early labour. Not the ideal way to spend my last night before becoming a mother!

Re starting labour, I'd suggest relaxing. I also tried everything (am still sick of pineapple nearly 2 years later!) but some people believe relaxing can help trigger it to start naturally - you can buy a natural labour start hypnosis download here.

Sorry for the massive ramble! Really wish you all the best for a natural start to things Smile

well you dont have to concent to be induced and if i were you i would just refuse to have them start inducing you are midnight! that is madness! you need to have energy for labour, you may naturally go into abour in the night but to try and start things off int he night seems odd to me!

normally at my hospital you go in in the morning to be induced, iwas induced with all 5 of mine and the first three times i had to wait for a bed on delivery floor so they could break my waters. with no 4 and no 5 they just booked me straight onto the delivery floor (they have to break my waters as i am allergic to the prostin) i just rang in the morning to check they had a space available for me.

hyperstimulation is the reason i am allergic to prostin, i had contractions every 40 secons but didnt dilate at all and baby went into distress, thankfully he calmed down again so was able to avoid emergancy c section but it did mean that they never tried to use the gel on me again as even the lowest dose caused that reaction.

given your history have they checked to see if you are dilated enough to just break your waters? have you had a sweep? i would be wanting to try a sweep first if i was you and wait tillt erm plus 14 at least before going in as most health authorities dont induce till then anyway.

good luck hope things kick off on their own, but if not i would be insisting that i wnet in in the morning and not the middle of hte night and if you have to go in in the night then given your history of quick labour your partner should be able to stay with you, either by putting you on delivery floor or in a side room.

Hello

Firstly - I've heard of plenty of people going into labour naturally in the hours or days before they were booked in to be induced, so this worry may all be for nothing. And no, there is nothing more you can do to get this baby out.

Secondly, I was induced and had a fastish labour (5 hours), but only after they had broken my waters on the labour ward - that was around 24hrs after I'd had the pessary. And it is very usual for the pessary to take quite a while to get to work.

Thirdly, you will have your mobile phone with you and you can phone your husband as soon as you feel yourself reacting, rather than waiting until the hospital says he can come in.

Whenever I find myself worrying about these things I do like to remind myself that a maternity unit in a hospital has a lot of births of all different types every single weeks and they probably know what they're doing giving pessaries at midnight, even if we don't! Talk to them about it when you go in.

CavemanDave · 06/02/2012 18:45

Induction isn't compulsory - you don't have to go. If you work out your own dates (from LMP) are you much over?

childofourtime · 08/02/2012 09:33

Thanks very much for your posts. Helped me get assertive. I demanded another sweep on Monday morning (and a thorough one!) waited 3hrs and got one at 12. By 2pm had dull backache. By 4pm mild contractions. Arrived birth unit at 5.40,delivered 1hr later in the pool! I as close as damnit to my dream birth-hypnobirth music on, lights dim, still agonizing but quick! And most importantly, a healthy 8lb2 baby boy! So fantastic to have my husband with me. We were allowed to snuggle up as a 3 for the night in the double bed in our room, what an ace experience from the NHS!

Congratulations childofourtime, glad you didn't have to go through induction after all. Come on over to post-natal Feb baby thread, if you fancy it. Some have already popped, I still have three weeks to go :)
