Normal to follow your Mum's pattern of whether baby arrives early or late?

OK, so I'm 36 weeks now and my Mum was around 2 weeks early with me and my two younger brothers. I just have a gut feeling that this is worth bearing in mind as surely there's a chance I might follow suit. My midwife dismissed the idea of there being any link at all, so I just wondered what your experiences had been and if you think there's a link? Obviously I know what will be will be, just intrigued to see what others have found!

My Mum was induced twice at around 10 days over. My sister was induced at 2 weeks over. I went into labour naturally at 41 weeks and 40 weeks respectively.

My mum had high BP which needed induction and back to back babies. Me too so far!

I was 11 days late, born 1:42am. DS1 was 11 days late, born 1:42am! Similar labour times too. DS2 bucked the trend and was born on time, 2hr labour whereas my younger brother was 6 days late.

my mums all on time, mine tend to be late

GwennieF · 06/02/2012 13:29

There's a similarity with me and my DM

DM
DD1 - 2 weeks late
DD2 (me) - 2 weeks late
DS - 4 weeks late

Me
DS - 40+15
DD - 40+14

However, that is where the pattern ends; my DSis was 8 weeks early with her DS, though she had a raft of problems during her pregnancy that would have made her going full term virtually impossible.

DB's were all early (3, 6 & 11 weeks early), though I think that the fact that his XW smoked heavily through all of her pregnancies played a major role in that!

My mum had 3 children, all her labours lasted 2.5 hours. Her first baby was 40+4, her second was born at 34 wks, her third was born at 32 weeks after some sort of bladder infection. All her children weighed less than 7lb 5oz.

With DS my labour lasted 17 hours and he was born at 39 weeks weighing 8lb 6oz.

Am pregnant with DC2 and curious to know if this one will be similar to DS or to my mum's experiences.

My mum smoked all through her pregnancies, but I'm not sure if that impacted anything....

i don't think it is.
my mum -
3 girls, week late, day early, on time

little sis - 3 months early, few weeks early, few days early
bigsis, can't remember
me, 16 days late.

HSMM · 06/02/2012 13:45

I was the same as my mum, my sister wasn't.

2madboys · 06/02/2012 13:48

Not at all! My Mum had 4 easy births - 2 at home, all roughly on time. Me and my sisters have 6 children between us - 3 inductions, 1 emergency c section, 1 forceps, 1 ventouse, a hypno birth and a drug free hospital birth. I think sheets wonder what we're messing about at Smile

2madboys · 06/02/2012 13:49

She's wondering, obv!

Oops, embarrassing thread mix up by me Blush

I think I asked the same question when I was pg with DC1! My mum was two weeks early with her first (me :)), I was two weeks late with mine Hmm

We both had 7 lb 12 oz girls first though and similar labour times (8 hours for her, 7 for me).

Can't remember whether my little brothers were early or late.

I'm 33 weeks with my first baby and wonder what I'm in for then...

I was my mum's first and she went quite overdue with me, just over 42 weeks I think. I arrived naturally the day before she was due to be induced. Big, 8lb healthy baby.

My younger sister was prem and was born at 35 weeks. Poor thing was very small and fragile at just 5lb and had to spend several weeks in hospital before being strong enough to come home.

Hoping my daughter will arrive somewhere in the middle of that - not too early, not too late! Though I'd take going overdue over pre-term delivery any day for baby's sake.
