Sudden heavy bleeding 2 weeks after CS (TMI alert)

I had an ELCS a couple of weeks ago and had 5 days of light bleeding afterwards. Last weekend (so about 12 days post CS) I had terrible afterpains and some more very light brown bleeding but hardly anything.

I spoke to my midwife about it yesterday and she advised that afterpains at this stage were very unusual and that it might be my uterus trying to expel a retained clot/material and that I might pass something in due course. She also thought my uterus was still a bit high.

Well I have tonight had a gush of red blood which immediately soaked through the front of my (thin) pad. When I made it to the loo, I felt a clot (or something of substance) pass and quite a lot more blood, but couldn't really gauge size of clot etc because the toilet bowl was full of blood. I've cleaned myself up and think the bleeding has slowed (but haven't checked my pad since). I don't feel unwell, just unnerved.

Am a bit worried and have scared myself by googling secondary post-partum haemorrage and the things they do to you in the course of treating it.

On the one hand, it may be that this is what is supposed to happen and a good thing to get rid of the clot before it becomes infected.

On the other hand, is it bad that there is so much fresh red blood?

I am thinking of booking myself in with the GP tomorrow, but do I need to act more urgently?

Am posting also in General Health to pick up traffic - sorry for the duplication.

I think if it's slowed to a dribble then see your GP tomorrow but if you keep flooding then I'd call the labour ward tonight as they'll be well placed to advise you and there will be an obs on duty. Hope you're ok x

Having had a friend who went down hill quite quickly a good few weeks after delivering (albeit naturally) in my person opinion id give someone a call tonight.

Labour ward, NHS direct, out of hours doctor. Just someone to reassure you.

I had that after a VB - 2/3 big clots and a big gushing bleed.. I got checked and scanned and it turned out that there was an area that had clotted 'prematurely' so there was the sort of overflow situation described above.

So it isn't necessarily serious or scary but do get checked.

I have a slight theory which obviously could be completely wrong. What happened with me was after my c/s i didnt bleed at all until 4 weeks later. That was my due date. I had a, what i can only think of as a show and after that i bled. So my theory is that would have been when my body naturally made me go into labor and after the plug was out everything was free to happen. Is it possible you had something similar?

Thanks, everyone. The bleeding slowed last night and I've had hardly any today - we are in light period territory - so hopefully I've expelled whatever I needed to be rid of and my uterus will shrink down normally now.

Your advice was extremely helpful. I do love MN. Smile
