Norovirus outbreak at hospital

I'm due to go in for a C-section on Tuesday and Its all over the local papers that there is a norovirus outbreak at the hospital!
The hospital have put a temporary ban on visitors although partners will still be allowed in maternity.

I am worried about myself or the baby catching this and wondered whether they will discharge early under the circumstances, this is my second cs so I know what to expect I was discharged after just over 48hrs last time and If I feel the same this time feel I would be ok to come home after 24hrs, has anyone come home this early after a C-section?

The other option is to discharge myself if I am really worried, has anyone ever done this?

I did. I discharged myself 17 hours after my first c section. I did need a lot of help and obviously i didnt have an older child at home. It's doable if you have lots of support. Im due a cs on the 6th but i know realistically i'll stay in this time as my dd will want to climb all over me if im home on the sofa.

im pretending the break will be akin to a spa!

Thanks The Doctors wife, I'm in Wigan, don't worry.

DD is nearly 8 and i'll have plenty of help if I need it.

How did they react when you said you wanted to discharge yourself?

I had a CS in October and came home the following day - I told them beforehand that I'd like to if possible and that I had plenty of support at home.

I had a 5yo and 3yo at home too but DH or my Mum were there all the time to look after the older two.

So I'd say it might be worth mentioning it to them. As long as everything seems to be going well then they might be glad of the bed?

Tinkerisdead · 28/01/2012 14:37

I think they were glad to get the bed back!!
I asked to go home at 2am but they said i had to wait for catheter out and the cannula in my hand. I begged them to at least take the cannula out, they agreed if i promised not to bleed??!! It then splurted blood out Blush

I had to wait for a paed to come and check dd at about 6am and left when dh came. My mum looked after the house, dh looked after me and i looked after baby. So you should be okay with an 8 yr old so long as dh/dp around? Or mum? I needed help in and out of bath and also needed help to get the dressing off my wound in the bath. Wince.

I left 24 hours after having twins by c-sec. The girls were in scbu which actually meant I couldn't rest as much as someone taking baby home but I still went.

I had my section at 9am the first day, they took the catheter out that evening (don't remember about the cannula) and I showered at 7am ish the next morning and was sitting on the bed eating toast when the consultant came to see how we were. He was pleasantly surprised and said he was happy for us to leave as soon as my drugs had come up from the pharmacy. We left late afternoon.

I did struggle walking to the car and then putting the seatbelt on and it was awful when I got home and my parents, PIL and my Granny were all there! Sent everyone home after about half an hour and settled down to rest. Was much nicer then than being in the hospital anyway Smile

Tinkerisdead · 28/01/2012 16:32

Oh god yes the seatbelt. And the people visting.

Big tip if you come home early stay in your nighty because people will assume its like a vaginalbirth and you've been let out on the same basis. They wont appreciate that ideally you'd be in for 3-5 days. If you stay in your nighty you'll be respected as a patient. And its waaaay more comfy!

Thanks everyone

I'm going to ask to come home on the Wednesday, i'll rest better at home anyway and DH is off work for two weeks and my parents live 5 mins away if I need them.
