Need some help re:induction and how I can go about refusing

I am down to be induced on saturday at +12, I am very unhappy with this and have voiced this with the mw. I've asked if I can go in at +14 and they have said no as they are fully booked. I asked what would happen in the event i went into labour naturally at +14 if there werent enough staff and was told it was a different ward so there would be midwives available.

I feel like I am being totally forced into this, and dont seem to have a leg to stand on. I dont know what to say to the mw, she keeps telling me 'they wont let you go that far', but it isnt their choice?? its mine. I know when i ovulated to conceive this baby and it puts my due date at today, not 10 days ago. But she said the scan of the baby is more accurate than the LMP. But im not going on the LMP, im going on the LH surge detected when we were ttc. ??

She said, if you're lucky they'll be fully booked on saturday and you wont have to go in then. It didnt even occur to me to ask what would happen in that situation, if all of a sudden a space would become available on the monday for me to be induced then.

I am going in this afternoon for 'the sweep of my life' as she put it. Which i am NOT looking forward to as earlier on the phone she didnt think a second sweep would do much, so am i just setting myself up for more pain after the sweep? After my last sweep I started getting minor contractions and got really excited, is this just going to fool me into a false sense of hope when this happens again?

Im so upset, Ive been in tears this afternoon. I hate feeling pressurized to have this baby, i know it will come when it's ready, my last one was 12 days late. I so want to have my home birth and dont want that taken away from me.

Need to get DD2 ready for nursery. hope someone can give me some pointers before i go in at 230 x

Thank you everyone for your advice. Had a chat with midwife this afternoon who has spoken to the senior mw, and they have cancelled my induction and agreed i can go in on sat to be monitored and will meet a doc who will assess how far over i can go. So am feeling happier about that.

Had a really good stretch and sweep (can stretch to 5cm apparently) so i dont think ill be waiting around for much longer anyway, plus i think my waters may have broken (i was sitting on the loo, finished weeing, then lots more fluid came out however ive never had waters break so no idea how much there should be and didnt seem like there was enough tbh).

Thanks again lovely ladies :)

That's great. Just remember it's how far you are happy going, not how far you 'can go' Wink.

Sending you contract-y vibes!

StarlightMcKenzie · 26/01/2012 19:17

What if you go in and induction takes until you are 14 days.

Youremindmeofthebabe · 26/01/2012 20:39

I refused induction From +11-routine here, until +14. at +11 I had to go in for monitoring, but found that everyone was really nice and supportive at the hospital about the delay. I had a second sweep which nearly worked, I though lt I had gone into labour that night, but it was a false start. I went. In and had the induction at +14 and it really wasn't that bad. I had one dose of pessary and could feel backache by the end of the monitoring you had to have after tge pessary. From that point it was only 6 hours til ds was born naturally, with a second stage of actively only 7 minutes.
I feel tge decision to delay was right for me, but also the induction really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I also had wanted a homebirth before that, so understand the disappointment! Good luck with it.

One handed typing sorry for the spelling etc!

nickelhasababy · 27/01/2012 10:51

don't forget to stand your ground with the doctor - they only ever see worst-case scenarios, so are more likely to try to push you for intervention.

nickelhasababy · 27/01/2012 10:53

and NICE guidelines say you can safely go 96 hoursafter your waters break before they need to start worrying about getting you going.

breatheslowly · 27/01/2012 18:55

The thing about the number of inductions booked on any day is odd as they don't know how long an induction will take. Mine took 4 days. They seemed to use inductions to smooth out demand on the labour ward - saying "we'll do this, then examine you, then, if there is space on the labour ward we will move you on to the next stage" - with the implication that if there wasn't room they would just leave me in limbo. Apparently if you delay after 12 days you are endangering your baby, if they cause the delay then your baby is just fine Hmm.

PreggoEggo · 28/01/2012 18:07

nope not my waters. I was told i probably wouldnt need the pessary as i am already 2-3cm dilated, but that they'd break my waters first. Anyone have this? Ive read horror stories about the drip so really dont want to have that done... what are my other options if breaking my waters doesnt work? Ive agreed induction at +14 which is monday.

I had my waters broken and was immediately put on the drip. I too had heard horror stories about the drip but it wasn't that bad, I managed about 4hrs of the drip before I needed G&A and then Epidural. This was my first baby though, the MW did say when it's not a first baby they'll normally give a couple of hours for contractions to start naturally. I don't think that there are any other options though, once your waters are broken they get much funnier about time scales due to higher risks of infection.

nickelhasababy · 30/01/2012 14:02

Preggo - i was 3cm dilated at my sweep, too.
My waters didn't break until just before DD was born.
I was advised (unofficially) by the MW who did my sweep to have sex.
Went into labour the next morning.

4madboys · 30/01/2012 14:16

i went to plus +14 with all mine, infact +18 with ds3! and i cant have the prostin so they have to break my waters to start labour, i always insisted that i wouldnt have the drip straight away, they will say you can have 4hrs or so but i argued for at least 12hrs.

anyway i didnt need the drip and went on to labour naturally with ds2, ds3, and ds4, infact i had ds4 in the birth pool :)

i did have the drip with ds1 but had a 3 day labour and he was my first.

with no 5, dd i did have the drip again, but i was induced at +9 days as i was worried re her movements and i had been ill and so had two of my children so i had had enough. in retrospect monitering and scans showed she was fine so i should have waited til +14 or later and i dont think i would have needed the drip, however even with the drip i still have a mobile labour, sat on birth ball, kneeling, all fours etc and it took 3hrs and i just used gas and air, so even a labour with the syntocin drip doesnt have to be terrible.

but wait till term +14 and see how you feel, sounds like you may well go into labour before then? if not ask for a scan etc to check on baby and wait a few more days if you want, if you do decide to be induced then hopefully breaking your waters will work, it did for me and dont let them force you to thave the drip too soon. after they break your waters they will want to moniter you for a bit to check baby is ok, then once that is done, get up, get mobile etc and that should encourage labour to get going :) good luck :)

PreggoEggo · 31/01/2012 10:19

thanks everyone. I spoke to the consultant yest and induction moved to thursday, gives me a few extra days and will take me to +17. I feel by then if baby hasnt come then its time to get a move on. I was surprised when he said after they break my waters i will have 2 hours to start contracting otherwise ill go on the drip... yet the woman 2 beds down had her waters break naturally and they told her to come back next week for an induction, just watch out for infection! I will refuse to have the drip so soon after my waters breaking, i think thats a bit silly. Hoping it doesnt come to that though, going to just totally relax the next few days, not try any baby out techniques as i think they just end up taking over my mind, maybe a bit of reverse psychology is in order. Have planned to walk into town later, browse the shops, and go for a swim tonight. :)

Book some really expensive tickets to the cinema or theatre - that'll encourage him or her out!

nickelhasababy · 31/01/2012 10:34

have you had a sweep?
(or another one)

Flisspaps · 31/01/2012 10:39

Preggo I had my waters broken at +15 and even with light meconium in them, I had 4 hours before they wanted to start the drip off!

If there had been no meconium staining, I'd have been sent back to the antenatal ward to see what happened - probably for up to 24 hours, which is what their policy is for women who have SROM and no contractions.

morethemerrier · 31/01/2012 11:29

Preggo, you sound like you have been able to re group and are definitely in the right frame of mind to go into spontaneous labour!

I have made the mistake previously of falling into the curry, pineapple, sex, mountain climb to get things going and pretty much exhausted myself!

So your plan to shop, relax and get in the zone sounds perfect to me! Grin

Good luck x

PreggoEggo · 31/01/2012 11:46

lol sleep maybe i will do just that!!

nickle i've had 2 sweeps, my last was on thurs... i wonder why they havent offered me another? I think i've heard if two dont work then a third unlikely. Going in for monitoring tomorrow so might ask them to have a go then. The last one I had was quite vigorous, even the mw said she'd be surprised if nothing happened! But alas baby too comfy (even though she kept poking it's head!).

fliss thats really interesting about your waters and the drip... maybe tomorrow i will do a bit of research about it so i can back myself up! But for today, i am just going to leave all be :)

merrier deffo in a better frame of mind, and just about to brace the freezing cold and nip to the shop. wish it were a bit warmer/sunnier then i'd be inclined to go for a nice relaxing stroll but i hate it when its grey and freezing...!

this might help

nickelhasababy · 31/01/2012 13:40

you need sex.

Crmmum · 05/02/2012 01:01

I will share me experience, as I refused induction, which I know isn't really the done thing, but I figured I'd be the first woman to be pregnant forever if my baba didn't come of his own accord! I reached 40 weeks and had a sweep at 40+5. No success. Midwife told me she was going to book me for induction and I said no thanks. She seemed quite annoyed and told me that if I got to 40+ 10 I would have to be monitored be her daily. I told her that sounded lovely, and I'd like to see her every day if it came to that! Ha! So 40+10 came and went... I had my bp checked every day, and another sweep, but still no movement. Under this insistence of my go and the community midwife I was booked in for induction if I hit 40+14. I reluctantly agreed and was booked in for 9am on that date. I gave birth at 8.22 the morning I was booked in! Don't be bullied! X
