Cost of consultant from 35 weeks

Does anyone know what the cost of a private consultant is from 35 weeks if you have a medically necessary C-section. The hospital fees are covered insurance wise but trying to work out the cost for the last few weeks with the consultant given late registration. I'm planning to deliver at the portland.

Can't you ring them? I havent been to Portland but i thinks its a flat fee for care through delivery elsewhere. Something like 5k at st Thomas but I havent got details to hand.

Have you appointed a consultant yet? Fees really vary and your insurance should cover one pre and post natal consultation. For mine it would have been £300 per visit if I did not have the package offered.

Hi - thanks for replying. I'm not 100% sure I'm going to need to yet. I'm 32 weeks nearly and at the last appointment the baby was transverse. Hopefully he'll move but failing that they'll have to transfer me from Midwife led to consultant led for a C-section (also if ECV fails I guess). I called AXA this morning and they cover pre and post consultations plus £600 for the fee part of the cost - just shy of £900 for the consultant fee and then cover all the hosp and op costs but only for 3 nights. We were planning on spending a certain amount on MW led anyway which wouldn't be covered, so I'm assuming that this money would just end up being what we pay to a consultant if that makes sense, as everything else ould be covered. I'm going to speal to the hospital on monday to see who they would transfer to me and how much that costs etc.

Just wondered if anyone had a similar situation as I understand that a lot of people do transfer there at 35 weeks when they realise that they can have a (partially) covered c-section.

I was exactly the same as you with DS1, I had to transfer from midwife led due to him being breech. When I had him, my liabilities to MLD were for antenatal only and the ecv and delivery were covered by insurance to a degree. I know lots of ladies who had to transfer to consultant care at a late stage and I guess your covering consultant will be looking after you. For DS2 I had to have consultant led care but I got on really well with my then covering consultant so it was lovely to go back to her.

I think that most consultants who deliver at the Portland will charge between £2-3.5K for one pre and post natal consultation and an elective CS if you engage them just for that, and after 36 weeks of so. As you've found out, insurance companies usually cap what they're prepared to contribute so you need to be prepared to make up the difference.

But I think at the Portland isn't there a £1600 fee if you need to transfer from MLD to consultant care? I don't know whether this means you still choose your own consultant, and how this interacts with insurance coverage.

I had to pay £1500 which covered my antenatal with the midwives, unless things have changed you dont have to pay for the transfer, if you do its a bloody rip off! You could always choose your consultant but everyone I know went with their covering as they appointed ones the midwives knew and respected.
