Odd question about C-section!

Hi all,
Something that is troubling me should I end up needing an emcs for any reason.

I am very overweight, hasn't proved to be a problem at all in pg and happily still under midwife only care. However, nearly all my fat is gathered on my stomach and I have a horrid overhang, I kind of thought that my bump would spread some of the fat out for some reason, however, it hasn't, at 32 weeks I have a very obvious bump, but my fat just seems to have moved downwards if that makes sense and hangs off the bottom of the bump- sounds horrendous!

I am assuming that if I were to have a emcs they cut as low as possible, would they go under the overhang or just cut higher up into the actual bump? Though there must be a lot of baby behind the fat if that makes sense?!

If they did cut under, would it take forever to heal?

Anyone have any clue? I am just trying to mentally prepare myself- don't want to end of having to go to theatre and having some surgeon exclaim about my fat and upsetting me at a pretty fragile time.

Thanks
H

I was huge when I had my EMCS and they cut underneath my fat. I did have some problems with it healing but nothing too serious- just took a little longer. It's fine now though. Good luck- you'll be fine xx

It's under the overhang I'm afraid. My 2 week old scar is struggling to heal as it is buried by my own overhang. Now on second lot of anti biotics.

Under the overhang. sorry there must be a better word???

handbagCrab · 19/01/2012 16:39

Erm, under in my experience! Just across the top of where your pubes are. No one exclaimed in horror when they started operating on me (though I wouldn't have noticed if they did).

My scar has healed beautifully according to all the medical professionals that have examined it, I don't know if this is luck of the draw or not.

Good luck with your pregnancy :)

they will cut under, just below the bikini line and it will heal fine. Most people have an overhang after a cs even if they didn't before. Been there done that Grin and no mention of my size from anyone involved.

GlaikitFizzog · 19/01/2012 16:43

Yep under the overhang just above your "bikini" (like I'd be wearing a bikini ever) line. If you do end up with a CS can I recommend getting some gauze to place in the overhang to stop skin on skin and help keep the area dry. It gets quite sweaty down there! Also, wash it daily with warm water with a little tea tree in it.

Thanks everyone- I thought it would be under, just checking!

We will see what my ever increasing bump does to the fat- am hoping for some slightly better distribution!

Under, as everyone has said. It should heal no problem - I have found the main thing about it being under an overhang is it won't be open to the air as a scar somewhere else would be so you must be careful about drying it after a shower/bath (carefully, at the beginning of course).

I had same thing as you and noone mentioned my fat before or after my EMCS (not that there was really time before).

pixiestix · 19/01/2012 22:55

Under. Mine healed fine. Smile

I have witnessed many c sections and seen many pregnant bodies, just to reassure you this is not at all uncommon so please don't think the surgeons wont of seen it before, you should not be self conscious! They should not bat an eyelid. Afterwards just be careful to try and allow some time to let air get to the site of your scar which will help it to heal, (just lie on sofa and rest your hands on your tummy so as to hold the overlying skin away) and keep it really clean. I hope it all goes smoothly for you.
