Should i push for a sweep? or not?

I am 40+2 and have a midwife appointment at 40+4, I asked when i made the appointment if i would get a sweep at this appointment (made at 38 weeks, when i thought baby would have arrived by now) she said no sweep at 40+10 and induction at 40+14. But the consultant said he wouldn't let me go over 40+10. ( I have no more appointments booked with my consultant)

So i want to push for the sweep at my midwife appointment. Are there any reasons I should not want a sweep?

(I want one as i am worried the longer he is in there the bigger he is getting, i had a third degree tear with DS and this baby is OP so i'm scarred and want the delivery over with. Are there any other reasons i can give for wanting a sweep?)

It depends on the midwife, some are happy to do it, others less so. Fwiw, I was overdue with both of mine, and both were OP. My second OP birth was a doddle, and I did have a sweep which I don't think was all that helpful, but it gave me hope as I knew I was already pretty much 3cms dilated, which apparently is not uncommon in subsequent babies. My big tip is to stay active and upright. My first OP labour I spent on my back dosed up with epidural and dd came out face up, it was very difficult to push her out. With ds, I was upright and on all fours, it was a 3 hour labour and he turned before delivery. Good luck :)

NICE guidelines state they should be offered from the 40 week appointment if i remember rightly, so I think you should ask her for one. There may be a reason why she won't/can't do it sooner but I would definitely ask and push if no good reason given why not.

Bear in mind though, they are not always possible if your cervix is not favourable.

I had sweep at 38 & 39 weeks and she came on edd. 3rd baby and prev 2 op. agree with fuckity to keep upright and mobile. Good luck x

I am currently 39+6 and have a MW app booked for 40 +6. She told me she would do a sweep at this app. I really don't like the idea of one - can i refuse?

lucky24 · 10/01/2012 20:56

helsinkhelen yes you can refuse and have an induction at +14 (although some people refuse inductions too and are monitored daily)

I'm not convinced they do any good anyway. I had two on DD1and she arrived eventually at 41+6. Good luck hope your bundle doesn't keep you waiting :)

I'm not convinced about them either, they are rather uncomfortable and didn't seem to do much for me.

I think they can be very helpful, I had one at 40+1 and was told my cervix was still high and unfavourable, but then had DD2 by lunchtime the next day (so 24 hours after sweep).
