Too late for group B strep test- Anyone not have this?

Hi,

I am one week from due date and suddenly remembered about group B strep, after looking up tests it looks like it is a 3 week minimum turn around so will be too late for me.

Has anyone else not done this test or have any advice? Am worrying a little. The chances seem slim to be a problem but should I be reassured by this?

Thanks for any advice or support.

I didn't have one before DS was born (Nov 2010). It's not a standard test
here is some advice which may be useful. and the NHS advice

Worth reading for the early onset signs - but it is really rare so don't worry too much!

I didn't have one with DD and have no intention of having it this time unless symptoms are shown.

FutureNannyOgg · 03/01/2012 19:23

I wouldn't worry. You can test positive one day and not the next. If you have no symptoms then I wouldn't bother.

HappyCamel · 03/01/2012 19:27

I wasnt offered one.

pootlebug · 03/01/2012 20:03

I'm not bothering. Since it can come and go so quickly as FutureNannyOgg says.

blueeyedmonster · 03/01/2012 21:34

It can come and go but it can also stay in your system, there are two versions my consultant tells me. I got swabbed by the doctor when I felt something wasn't right at about 9 weeks and it came back positive for gbs.

I never had the test last time and it is quite possible that I had gbs then too, i'll never know.

I've had 4 dc and never had a strep test. I don't think it's offered as a routine thing.

Try not to worry :)

Thank you all for your replies. It seemed everyone I know had done it so it is reassuring to hear I'm not the only one.

Thanks.

Check out the doctor's laboratory, they will send you a kit in the next post and the results are usually through in about 3 days. They let you know by text.

You need to be swabbed as close to delivery as possible, the reason for not doing it too late is that you might give birth before the results are back.

"if you have no symptoms I wouldn't bother": GBS carriers don't usually have symptoms but can still pass it to their babies.
