Food/drink to take to hospital for labour?

I'm due to give birth anytime and trying to sort out some food/drink to take with us. I have a health problem which means my body doesn't break down glycogen into glucose so that rules out lucosade, sweets etc. I have some cereal bars and sugar free jellies so far.........any other ideas?

Flapjacks

Dried fruit bars or Are they too sugary so likely to give you same issue As lucozade? Digestives

Ah good ideas, thanks guys. Love bananas too. Not sure why I didn't think of fruit already as it's kept me going through my pregnancy!

I was told not to eat bananas in labour as they are difficult to digest but not sure I believe everything the midwife says.

Something salty, I coulnt face sweet stuff so was glad my DH had packed some TUC cracker things.

Like Teacup, I had Ritz biscuits :)

I was told to avoid bananas too londonmackem apparently they are good at giving you rotten indigestion in labour!!

flowerflo · 02/01/2012 20:53

Ok, will avoid the bananas then! Mmmmmh TUC or Ritz biscuits.......its making me hungry. I'm definitely a more savoury person. I'll probably get there and not feel like eating anything but I'm sure DP will be starving anyway!

Don't just think about snacky stuff but more substantial stuff you might want to eat when you're back on the ward afterwards. Hospital meals can be bad and if you get back to the ward just after a meal (especially if its supper) you won't be offered any food for ages. If the hospital isn't particularly close to where you live (mine was 45 mins away) check to see where the local supermarket is & what its opening hours and then you can always despatch DP/DH to get you something. My DP was sent off to the local Tesco at 8am (breakfast having been served at 7.30am and lunch not til noon and I'd been vomiting throughout labour so hadn't eaten since lunch the day before) to buy me croissant, apples and chocolate and luckily thought to get some sandwiches for lunch.
