Waters broken - questions about induction tomorrow

DarcieandSnowballsmum · 20/12/2011 14:04

My waters broke @ 5:30am today no contractions have followed, MW has been out and confirmed waters have gone and booked me onto labour ward for 8am for drip induction if my contractions do not start on their own.

Will I really need an epidural if I have a drip are contractions really that painful?

Will I be able to move around or will I be kept to a bed and monitored?

Any way I can get these contractions going on their own?

i don't know what will happen to you, but I was induced and my lo was distressed and was being monitored. For this reason I was not mobile and as a result I needed an epidural. Yes it hurt ALOT I think if i could move about i would have coped better. I won't touch G&A either because I don't 'do' feeling sick Blush
The epidural was heaven.
Start to finish was 8 hours, ventous, no episiotome.

In terms of getting started on your own I would just keep as mobile as absolutely possible, let gravity do it's magic. Oh, and eat and sleep as much as possible!

Thank you for replying Smile

If I had an epidural would I be able to come home the same day?

erm i don't know. it depends on so much. you might have a catheter which might prevent that. i honestly can't remember how long it was before i could feel my feet but i know i still had my catheter. It depends more on getting baby's checks done, blood loss etc etc not sure the epi in itself would be a problem...but i honestly don't know

if you are planning on breast feeding, you could be in longer as my mw wouldn't let me leave until feeding was established (took 5 days!)

This happened to me - waters broke at 8am - was threatened with induction the next day. Walk walk walk - I walked up and down hills for an hour at a fast pace (this was a sight to behold at 40+2 pg believe me) then bounced a lot on fit ball - contractions finally kicked off at 5.45pm and DS2 was born at 7.31pm. Walk walk walk walk walk. Good luck Smile

So maybe it's best if contractions don't start on their own to try the drip first and if pain is too much then epidural. Really don't want epidural.

Thanks Bic staying on my feet is the best option then Grin

why not hun? it was ok honestly....the relief was amazing!

you just need to remember that when things get going you will be pumped full of adrenalin and kind of go into yourself to concentrate on the job in hand.

I'm terrified of c-section. but i remember clearly thinking it would be ok during labour. changed my mind again now though Grin You do whatever is necessary.

BicNoddyHolder · 20/12/2011 14:29

I didn't want epidural either - that was why I was so bloody determined to get things going without induction. Yep - on yer feet. Forget walking actually - march - hup 2 3 4 Grin

supadupaturkeystupor · 20/12/2011 14:30

haha!

DarcieandSnowballsmum · 20/12/2011 14:33

LOL!

The no to epidural is because I have 2 bulging discs the bottom and the thought of a needle pushing in there freaks me out. Also I want to be home as quick as possible to see my DD and get settled.

I was the same as you - waters broke on NYE - nothing happened so I was booked in for an induction 7.30 NYD - no pain until after a sweep at 7.30 pm then DS born at 11 pm. Only gas and air and TENS - I was on the drip but I stayed vertical until right at the end - seriously, insist on standing up! I am a great believer in gravity - the MWs grumbled a bit because it meant they occasionally lost DS's heartbeat and picked up mine, but it was really worth it - I basically paced up and down until it was time to push then he arrived. Having had 2 more without being induced I honestly have to say that being induced was no more painful at all. Good luck!

Thanks Tiggy That fills me with hope Grin

Haven't read all previous posts as DS is demanding attention but:

Contractions caused by drip really are something else, they can be adjusted almost as if there was a dial on it! And doctors will consider baby's wellbeing rather than your's when adjusting the drip, so I had to have an epidural. You might be entireliy different, I've got a feeling I'm not a "coper". Xmas Grin

You're quite likely to be monitored constantly. If you hate the CTG, ask for a "clip", this will be put on baby's head and you can still move around. Apparently the LO's aren't bothered in the slightest.

Will they start you off on a drip? I had a pessary first, which started my contractions, they were quite "natural" i.e. building up slowly. So probably that'll do it for you.

Anyway, good luck, hopefully things will get going tonight!

xlatia I was told I'd be put straight on a drip, but I guess that could change. I'm trying to be positive about being on a drip and in alot of pain. this was not the birth I had in mind! Thanks Smile
