Are 3rd births really as horrible as people make out?

I'm expecting DC3 in June. Since getting pg I keep being told how 3rd births are awful, longer, more painful and more likely to end in a CS. After 2 pretty straight forward VB with one being at home, I'd really like another straight forward VB.

So please be honest and tell me the truth about 3rd births.

Thanks.

I meant I only have 2 dc Xmas Hmm Xmas Grin

Moosemama yes I've read that too. I've always done lots of watery things (sailing, diving, swimming) and secretly hoped my two would be born that way, silly I know. They were both css in the end so no chance of that.

Ds1 was born in his caul too!

He swims like a brick though. Grin

Deafworm · 19/12/2011 20:32

Dd3 was the easiest and calmest birth I've had, now expecting dc 4!

elliejjtiny · 19/12/2011 21:10

DS3 (DC3) was my easiest, It was ds2 who was the most painful as he was back to back.

ash6605 · 19/12/2011 21:19

I just really don't get where this idea comes from? All births are different how can a 3rd be worse? Although in my experience yes my 3rd was dramatically worse-induced, 26hours long, back to back baby(me having SPD) resulted in an emergency delivery as he was shoulder dystortia. Total coincidence though surely? Hmm

befuzzled · 19/12/2011 21:28

Mine was the best and least painful!

Heavensmells · 19/12/2011 21:43

Dc3 was by far the fastest, 2 hours in all.

With number 3 no one would take me seriously when I said he was coming. When I finally got someone to examine me I said 'can I push?' and they said 'yes' and that was it-she wrote down that stage of labour as 2 mins.

GinGirl · 19/12/2011 22:44

Really winds me up when other people helpfully make sweeping generalisations about birth based on 'everyone says...' particularly when those comments are aimed at pregnant mothers!
My 3rd birth was another lovely home birth, your unborn baby doesn't know it is number 3 don't forget. And each birth is different because each baby is slightly different and will present slightly differently. Good luck, enjoy it!

Another one here where third birth was the easiest. 3 hours from them starting off the induction by breaking my waters in theatre and sticking me on the drip to her being born. Official times were 2 hours labour, 2 minutes pushing - although did go from 3cm to 10cm in about 10 minutes. I suspect if I hadn't been induced and therefore tied to a monitor it would have been even quicker.

All in all it was a lovely labour and honestly the best day of my life. And nothing at all like the 20 hour labour I had with DC1 so please don't rely on that rumour!

Why do people relish in telling you horror stories when you're pregnant? Just baffling!

Umm. I dropped eldest at school at 9 am ( she was nearly 7) and made her walk across the road ad take herself in ( with the lollipop lady) for the 1st time ever - I didn't know why I couldn't do it but I couldn't.

Phone work to say sorry I didn't feel well and they'd have I cancel the morning but I might be ok for later on, I just didn't feel well.

Phone DH crying " I don't know whats wrong but come home" . Puffed and panted through Vanessa ( I even remember the darned crap tv I was trying to fix my mid on!) .

Got to hospital at 11 with me saying " it's breech I'm having a section" and kneeling on the flor in the corridor " admiring the Lino" till they found someone to admit me.

The finally bothered to examine me and still saying " need a section" and them saying " it's a head and you can push" I was wheeled into the delivery room in time to have her at mid day!

So from feeling dodgy at 9, contractions 2hrs at the outside.

( eldest induced, 24 hrs plus, ds spectacularly drawn out labor from trying to stay home to being sent in at mid day with " it'll be soon" to having him at 18-12).

3rd birth was fine. 12 mins of pushing - think it was two or three pushes in total.

3cutedarlings · 19/12/2011 23:00

My 3rd was lovely! like shelling peas, why do some people like to scare pregnant ladies summat senseless? dont sweat it you'll be fine Xmas Smile.

Dee03 · 19/12/2011 23:10

3rd and last was a home birth, 4 hours 20 mins, very calm and relaxed... Lovely!!! Smile

Rosebud05 · 19/12/2011 23:16

Less than 3 hours active labour. Asked midwife to break my waters when fully dilated and ds surfed out so easily I didn't actually realise that he had been born.

WinkyWinkola · 19/12/2011 23:21

Ds2 (3rd) born at home after 2 hours of labour. It wasn't a blissful experience but easiest so far.

That said, no two birth experiences are ever the same.

Just follow your own instincts as to what feels right for you. Don't dread. Anticipate and be confident in your preparations. X

PrettyCandlesAndTinselToo · 19/12/2011 23:37

I was told that third births were generally easier! Mine certainly was: 2h13mins from first contraction to baby in my arms. Dc1 was 48h and dc2 was 27h. Dc1 and dc2 were SVD and 2nd degree tears, after dc3 I did not need any stitching.

With dc3 I got to the pool about three contractions before transition. I did not push, just let gravity and my body ease him out, 10-15mins after I got into the pool.

Why should a 3rd birth be harder? Your body knows what to do, and you know what to do to help your body get on with the job. Have confidence in your proven ability to birth babies.
