What did you wear....?

Ok, I know it isn't the biggest problem in the world, but just wondered what you wore

  • to actually go to the hospital?
  • for the delivery?

(With ds1 it was sommer, so could wear loose dress. This time it's cold, plus all my trousers are really tight, don't fancy sound of it while having contractions. Does anyone just dive to hospital in dressing gown - not sure I could!)

With delivery, I remember just getting on with it in what I was still wearing to come to hospital, so was a bit trussed up in bra & everything, plus bra etc was all covered in blood, which was a pain. Also, couldn't really do the delivering on the tummy, skin-to skin, straight to the breast thing. Did people ask to 'get into something more comfortable', wear a hospital gown/nothiing at all?

Minor concerns, I know, I guess with no social life I need to worry about what to wear for something

going to the hospital- a marquee

for the birth - one of those horrid back slit things the hospital provide
you know the things that shows all your arse

suedonim · 07/11/2003 10:16

I wore day clothes to the hospital and changed into my own nightie or t-shirt when it was time to get down to business.

monkey · 07/11/2003 10:22

I seem to remember also wearing one of ds's nappies, as leaking a steady stream for ages. Trousers def. out then. Oh God, the prospect of a dive across town in a dressing gown is looming large....

an old t shirt of dhs that you can bin

Before kids I remmeber thinking - when do you take your pants off..

karenanne · 07/11/2003 10:42

to hospital i wore a loose pair of combat trousers and baggy tshirt with a pair of giant fluffy slippers.we couldnt get near the entrance to the maternity ward in the car so had to park and i waddled the rest of the way through contractions ,it was 9 am and there was people evrywhere going for appointments etc and remember them laughing at the slippers!!:0
as for labour hospital gown much to my disgust at first but rather glad when i found out needed a emergency c section.the thought of having to change would have pushed me over the edge i think!!
im due just before xmas this time and im planning on big baggy tracksuit bottoms to go in in and then the faithful hospital gown again(another c section) and big baggy pjs for after.

I wore my ordinary clothes both times, and gradually removed more and more at the hospital - just whatever felt comfortable. With ds I changed into a big baggy nightshirt (still wear it now, with great affection ) when I left the low-tech ward to have my epidural, and dh pulled it up for me as soon as ds was born, because he knew how keen I was on skin-to-skin asap. With no2 things happened very quickly at the hospital, and I remember dh ripping my trousers and knickers off as I somehow scrambled up onto the bed yelling 'I need to push!' - so I'd advise no fiddly buttons! Then as soon as dd was born I was ripping off the rest of my clothes to get skin-to-skin, dh followed suit until the only decently dressed person in the room was my midwife. She'd seen it all before.

looking at my pictures after I realised I wore only my stripey socks! How glam

Beccarollo · 07/11/2003 11:06

I wore a nightie with DD that I still wear, makes me smile everytime I see it. With DS I wore tracksuit bottoms and vest top for most of the labour then put a nightie on when things were getting faster so I knew Id be ready - despise those nightgowns!!

I wore a company T-shirt, partly because it seemed funny, and partly because I'd been wearing it when my waters broke and we had to go to hospital.
I was advised to wear something that you wouldn't mind throwing away. No way would I have wanted to wear that T-shirt again!

Jenie · 07/11/2003 12:55

Red fluffy socks and a pink night shirt for both, I've thrown them away now as don't plan on having more children

EMJ · 07/11/2003 13:07

Wore my exh's favourtie bud t-shirt and got it covered in blood, revenge, just what the doctor ordered.

MUM2ELA · 07/11/2003 13:31

Wore a grey diesel t-shirt. And my knickers. I didn't want to take them off 'no, its alright, I'll keep them on' i kept telling the midwife.

Still wear the t-shirt, a very non-messy birth, and only 2 hours long, so hardly any sweat either!

Hope fully all my future birthing experiences (if there are any) will be like that . .

motherinferior · 07/11/2003 19:46

For dd1 I wore normal clothes to hospital then changed for epidural etc into a vast T-shirt sporting, for some bizarre reason, the name of a Manchester housing association (I think I got it through work at some point). The doctor actually asked me about it at one stage.

Dd2 was born at home in water, so I was gloriously naked

Ghosty · 07/11/2003 19:50

I wore normal clothes to hospital ...
Changed into a big loose shirt with no pants and just socks eventually when things kicked off
Was put into hospital gown for eventual c/s ...

bobthebaby · 07/11/2003 20:30

Old Blur T shirt of my brothers and trackpants to hospital.

Naked to do the business

Ghastly voluminous nightie of my mum's afterwards.

magnum · 07/11/2003 20:36

I went to hospital in a really comfy maternity tracksuit (Asda!!) and bought a really big cheap nightshirt to wear for the actual birth. It was only £3 from Matalan and therefore went straight in the bin at the hospital.

SoupDragon · 07/11/2003 21:00

Loose tracksuit type trousers to go to hospital and a hospital gown for labour/birth (I didn't want to ruin anything of mine!) and red satin PJs afterwards.

Dahlia · 07/11/2003 21:25

Huge billowing tent dress to go to hospital, then changed into a pink nightshirt which was even more billowing.

Angiel · 07/11/2003 21:25

Old t shirt that I changed into at the hospital for dd1. Still had my clothes on for ds, just about got my knickers off in time. Hospital gown (cs) for dd2. How can you throw the thing you wore away? I've still got mine, complete with faint blood stains, brings back all the memories.

MammyShirl · 07/11/2003 21:27

hello

going there i wore my trusty tracksuit bottoms i wore most of my pregnancy and tshirt and then for labour i bought a black nightdress - elle... people advise you to wear an old tshirt. half way through i whipped it off and was totally naked... pushing was sweaty business. just bring a big comfy tshirt or shortsleeved nightdress for labour and a good few change of pj's for after. I had to stay in 3 three days because i was put on antibiotic and i had to change my pj's 3 times in the first hour after giving birth so its worth while having a few pairs and not warm winter pj's. if you have summer ones - shorts and short sleeves are best as maternity wards are stupidly hot. good luck - its so exciting!

kando · 07/11/2003 21:29

I wore normal maternity clothes both to hospital both times. Once I got to hospital I changed into big baggy t-shirts (long enough to cover bum!) I've still got both t-shirts, but don't wear them - just get them out and "smile" at them every now and again!

Linnet · 07/11/2003 21:56

I went into hospital wearing my maternity jeans and a big baggy t-shirt that I'd been living in for oh the last 2 months. Once there and things really got going I changed into a nightie. Then spent the subsequent days afterwards in the hospital wearing nighties and my dressing gown.
Slightly off topic here but I got info yesterday at my booking appointment and it lists what to take into hospital etc. And it says in the leaflet to take light day clothes for your stay in hospital as the wearing of nightclothes during the day isn't encouraged. I wouldn't have thought it mattered so long as you are comfortable.
