just been to see midwife she gave me the impression that as i'm on my third baby its going to shoot right out. I've never had stitches before and from the sound of things if it whooshes out you tear usually. What do you think?

My 2nd "woooooooooooooshed" out - no stiches.

My 1st c...a...m...e o...u....t v...e....r...y s...l....o...w...l...y - third degree tear, 32 stiches!!

Your midwife should stop telling you scary thing that ain't necessarily so!!

Cuillan · 27/01/2006 22:26

My first took 6 hours, second 3 hours and my third arrived within 30 minutes of arriving at the hospital!!!! Yep i did tear, but my son was definitely worth all the stitches i then went on to have.On a plus side i kept thinking the quicker he was out the sooner the pain of labour would be over, so he could'nt arrive soon enough!!! Goodluck and all the best with your forthcoming arrival!!

Frizbetheexpansionset · 27/01/2006 22:36

My mate dropped last week no3 in an hour, no stitches!

TambaTheInnocentPrincess · 27/01/2006 22:51

First was 2 hours - no stiches

Second was 4 hours - no stiches

ShaysMummy · 27/01/2006 22:53

mine whoooshed out, in pool, leaving 2nd degree tear. apparently chances of tearing are less in water....yeah right!

Levanna · 28/01/2006 09:44

YM, my DD2 was born in 2 hours and birthed in 2 'pushes' ~ not much effort required by me!

I laid on my side as she crowned, it gave me a little control over the speed of her exit. It wasn't intentional, just felt right at the time and I'm certain it did help me not to tear.

poppiesinaline · 28/01/2006 19:52

My midwife gave me the impression while pregnant with my 3rd that I was likely to give birth very quickly (the other two weren't particularly quick 12 hrs and 9 hrs) but she was right. 3rd was very quick - arrived at hosp 4 cm dilated 8 am, he was born 9.25 am. No tearing, no stitches. So quick, doesn't necessarily mean you will tear. 3rd doesn't necessarily mean quick! I mean, how do they know? I suppose they are just going on the 'norm' maybe, but that doesn't mean that every 3rd baby is born quickly.

Lonelymum · 28/01/2006 19:55

My No 3 was certainly quicker than my Nos 1 and 2, but not that quick: I gave birth about 3.5 hours after arriving at hospital, not really sure if I was in labour or not (I was!)

I did not tear at all, but then, she was a bit smaller than my two boys.

bubblepop · 29/01/2006 14:08

my 3rd was quick, got to hospital with about 30 mins to spare before giving birth, no stitches, just a very small tear.

Levanna · 30/01/2006 11:01

My mothers first birth was 9 hours, her second birth 2 hours. Her third ~ 18 hours!

zubb · 30/01/2006 11:04

my third was an hour from first contraction to delivery, he was over 9lb, but no tears.

Aero · 30/01/2006 11:05

Tiny tears/grazes with all three, though have never had stitches. Each birth more or less was half the time of the last - no3 pretty much shot right out - so much so that my midwife (a very dear friend) almost dropped him!

Dinosaur · 30/01/2006 11:07

My third took rather longer to arrive than my second - and I didn't need any stitches.

LeahE · 30/01/2006 11:20

My mother's third did arrive very quickly (within about half an hour of arriving at hospital) but her fourth took about the same amount of time as #1 or #2.

Sallie · 02/02/2006 19:44

My third literally 'whooshed' out! Gave birth to her on all fours which I can heartily recommend and no tearing with her or my previous two so feel very lucky. I think the key is - listen to what the midwives are telling you - good luck! The birth of my third was truly magical and very serene....

Spidermama · 02/02/2006 19:45

CaptainDippy, great post.

Spidermama · 02/02/2006 19:50

I had four very different labours and tore every time. (Still wincing at the thought)
I don't know what it's like to not tear. My mw's advised me to rub almond oil into the perineum after baths or showers in the months and weeks leading up to the birth. I didn't do this diligently (sigh!). It might be worth a try for you.

Sallie · 03/02/2006 12:58

Didn't do any perineal massage myself but did do lots of pelvic floor exercises and listened very closely to what the midwives were telling me especially during pushing. Maybe its an anatomy thing anyway, ie there are those who just are more likely to tear than others whatever preparation they do.....good luck anyway! My labour got shorter each time and my babies got smaller too which was nice
