Baby has been sitting breech from at least 14 week scan am now 31 weeks and am wondering whats the likelyhood of baby turning round? i know there is plenty of time but midwife refuses to discus how likely it is he will turn and what will happen if he doesn't.

any one have any experience or knowledge about this? i'm a planner and it's driving me mad not knowing how likely it is and what i will do if it is the case.

I was the same and hated these feelings.
I knew DS wasn't going to turn. He didn't. I knew I wouldn't get as far as ELCS date. I didn't. EMCS at 38+2.
That aside I couldn't do any of the turning tricks you surely have googled because of bad SPD and heartburn!
But everything was fine, try to believe in yourself and the rest is a waiting game

I'm not really bothered if he doesn't turn i'm kinda of the opinion if he turns he turns if not i'll get a section it's just the not knowing that i don't like, i'm kinda thinking if he's been sat the same way all this time it's not that likely he'll turn but on the other hand maybe babys have some way of knowing they need to turn i don't know about... I'm to much of a control freak for my midwifes way of we'll cross that bridge when we come to it i need to know plan A and plan B! As long as i know the plan i can relax no matter if it turns out to be natural or section.

From my experience, the Plan if your baby is breech is to not worry about it till about 36 weeks on the grounds that most babies will turn by themselves before that point. So Plan A is that baby will have turned and, in the absence of other complications, you'll be recommended a vaginal birth. Plan B is that baby is still breech, at which point you'll be offered an External Cephalic Version (where they try to turn the baby through your abdomen) - if its successful you revert to plan A. If you either decline the ECV or it is attempted but doesn't work then you will most likely be recommended a CS, which is Plan C (or Ci). (You should probably be aware that before starting a CS they will do another scan - and its not at all unheard of for the baby to have turned, at which point many women have their CS cancelled.)

Some consultants in specific and hospitals in general are starting to talk about vaginal breech as a "normal but unusual choice" - and it is a choice regardless of how they present it (Plan Cii). The most up to date research suggests that vaginal breech is no more risky to mum or baby than CS as long as you have HCP's confident and competent in birthing breech babies - and that can be the sticking point. If you'd be reluctant to have a CS then its worth asking about and investigating.

(Should have said - my "experience" is that DD1 was breech from about 20 weeks and never turned. We declined an ECV and she deigned to arrive at 41+3, at home, still breech, with breech skilled IMs who we contracted at 36 weeks. DD2 was obligingly head down. DC3 currently breech and rapidly approaching 8 months...)

You will get a presentation scan at about 37 weeks and be offered an ECV which will be done at the trust where you are having your baby. The consultant will try about 4 times to turn baby from bum down to head down. If he/she can't do it then you will be offered a caesarian but you could have a vaginal breech delivery if you wanted xx

I know QTPie thanks, theres so many things that can happen with child birth not just things going wrong just not the way you plan but i still like to know the general plan of what would happen if baby doesn't turn.

Have a look at the AIMS website. and www.midwifery.org.uk. Lots of useful information on there.

There are quite a few units in the uk that are offering women the opportunity to delivery vaginally these days without a fight.

Research well and be prepared to stand up for what you believe in.

Good luck

kiki22 · 24/11/2011 23:31

I'm not worried about if i end up with a secion or not whatever they think is best for baby is what i will be doing.

Prepare yourself for a section then and all that that entails. Do your research thoroughly! And make sure you are the one making the decision.

kiki22 · 24/11/2011 23:58

i'm preparing for everthing lol, would rather not have a section the recovery sounds nightmarish but if it's to be it's to be if it's good enough for the Beckhams it's good enough for me hehe Grin

Becoming a mother is one of the first instances that you have to make decisions for yourself that might affect your baby. Make sure they are the right decisions and not ones that you have gone along with because someone else thinks you should.

Ohgoonthenpouranother · 25/11/2011 06:54

Kiki see you again in a few weeks maybe when you come back for advice in ECV (I didn't accept)
And a week after that when asking what you need for a section bag.

Btw I know more breech babies in my immediate group of mum friends than normal and none turned.
I think the stats need updating.

Hey get used to not having any control over what your baby is doing - that's what life will be like from now on Smile
Agree with the general consensus that you still have a long way to go but to try and feel you have a little control research all the options and prepare for all types of birth...
Btw I have had two ELCS (dd1 was breech, dd2 just didn't want to come...) and the recovery really isn't that bad. Just make sure you have as much help as possible and don't expect to be running marathons too soon after the birth!

kiki22 · 28/11/2011 17:19

thanks god my next MW app on wed see if he's changed by then, i think he might have been trying to turn yesterday bump was all sore n tight and he kept popping out at different places either head or bum by the feel of it.

DP can take 3 weeks off work if i end up with a section and my mum lives 5 mins walk away so will have lots of help :)

31 weeks is very early still (I know it doesn't feel like that!) I was just starting to try and get organised about this baby being breech when he turned at 35+6!

So all back to the original birth plan.

Having said that I wasn't intending on having an ELCS if it was a simple breech anyway.
