will baby be too big for me?

hi all,

I'm 32 weeks and at my 28 week scan baby weighed 2lb 9oz, the midwife said he would put on about 8oz per week, now i'm very petite 5ft 3in and now weigh nearly 8st, i was small to start with, and always have been.

Will i be given a c section or will baby come early if he runs out of room? or even if head is to big to fit through my pelvis.

Any advice appreciated!!

I was told you grow a baby to fit you. Sizes given from scans can be wrong, i was 'expecting' a 7lb 6oz baby but had 8lb 2oz two weeks early! Dont let that scare you though. Also so much of it is to do with the way the baby is lying than the size. I too am a shortie - 5 foot nothing.

Don't be concerned I'm sure all will be fine - I am petite 5ft 3 and weigh abput 7st -in May this year I gave birth to a 10lb 6oz baby! I was 2 weeks over due however! All was fine with the birth.

Women usually grow a baby that will fit them and will fit out of them! Try not to worry. As others have said scans can be wrong. In my experience if a woman grows a slightly bigger baby, the baby usually arrives earlier when they still fit!

I'm pretty small and had a baby who was measuring large for dates. Had a scan to check that everything was okay, and was told at that appointment that they can't predict that a woman won't be able to deliver a larger baby just because she is small - so no c-section.

I didn't deliver the baby without some damage to myself, and had to have ventouse and forceps - but - this could have been because he turned the wrong way in labour rather than because of his size.

Scan sizes an be massively inaccurate, my "9lb" baby was 6lb 2oz! Also it's the diameter of your pelvis versus your baby's head circumference that matters and they arent related to the height or weight of either of you.

I'm size 8 with a BMI of 17, and had 10lb 4oz and 10lb 5oz babies! My midwife said that the only time they get problems with babies being too big is with certain ethnic combinations, eg. a huge Scandinavian father with a petite Japanese mother etc.

Your body is amazing and knows what it is doing. It knows how to grow a baby that is the right size for you, trust in the process and you will be fine.

PrettyCandles · 21/11/2011 23:12

The baby's birthweight cannot be predicted from one scan. You would need a series of fairly late scans to get an accurate prediction.

Please don't be scared. Your body is designed to give birth naturally. Prepare yourself by learning the breathing and positioning techniques that you can use to help yourself, and, above all believe in yourself. Confidence and calmness help a lot in labour.

Iam only 5 foot and my biggest baby was 9lb 2oz,i was led to believe its the size of your pelvis, not the size or weight of yourself.I had a natural labour,my sister in law is 5ft 5,and a size 18,yet she only has a small pelvis,so couldnt deliever her babies naturally.

AntarcticEther · 24/11/2011 16:32

I'm under 5 foot and petite and am due next week . What happens if you start labour naturally and the baby is to big for your pelvis? Does labour just go slowly and nothing really happens as such , leading to a c section ?

Just curious .

PreggoEggo · 24/11/2011 17:33

im 5 foot and normally weigh 7.5st (32 preggo with baby 3 so not anymore!) and had my DD2 who was 9lb 4oz, small tear no stitches. Try not to worry about it, you dont want to go into labour being afraid of 'what ifs' - you'll make it a difficult experience for yourself. Just go with the flow, and believe in what your amazing body can do! good luck!

re: small pelvis- your body releases the hormone relaxin (sp??) to help the baby fit through so hopefully you wont have any problems. Babies are also very flexible, their skulls are designed to (hopefully) fit through your pelvis!

I'm your weight and height and gave birth fine to 9 pounders. Good luck. How exciting.
