Is the urge to push 5 hours after birth normal?

My friend just phoned screaming with pain, parter and new baby fast asleep and she can't walk to him to wake him.

Described intense urge to push with resulting extreme pain in anus and vagina.

Is this a toileting urge? constipation? or more serious issue such as prolapse?

am trying to calm myself now. i phoned doctor who is there so I'm waiting to hear.

I remember being hysterical with toileting pain after birth but not the urge to push.

anyone?

Oh gosh I have no idea. Retained placenta could be possible?

Dillydollydaydream · 16/11/2011 09:27

I was thinking placenta too. Hope all is ok with your friend.

FannyFifer · 16/11/2011 09:29

Oh your poor friend, maybe urinary retention, hope she is sorted soon, what a phonecall to get.

ShowOfHands · 16/11/2011 09:32

A friend did have some kind of temporary paralysis in her bladder/urethra and couldn't wee but it didn't present quite like this.

I suppose there are many possibilities and hopefully they'll sort her out in no time. She must be very frightened.

Only time I had an urge to push after giving birth to dd was when I gave birth to the placenta (after 2 hours of waiting for the drugs to help it come out easier to work)

How is she?

justlookatthatbooty · 16/11/2011 17:29

She went to the hospital this morning and I spoke to her at midday, she was presumably on painkillers as couldn't iterate the diagnosis and said she would be in touch as dr coming. Feels like that was a long time ago now and am thinking she must be having some kind of surgery.
Is surgery for retained placenta fairly straightforward? I don't know which hospital she's at. Just waiting to hear.

Surgery for a retained placenta is straightforward usually yes, if that's what it is.

Withwoman · 16/11/2011 18:52

It is unlikely to be a retained placenta. I hope your friend is ok, can you update?

Withwoman · 16/11/2011 19:06

or was see freebirthing without a midwife?

justlookatthatbooty · 16/11/2011 20:13

Thanks for the messages
Am trying not to go crazy with concern.
It's now 9 hours since I've had a sign from her and we've been in touch every couple of hours for months also for first part of labour which was a midwife assisted homebirth. Apparently very straightforward. She only phoned me in agony 5 hours after baby born, midwife already gone.
I know that her partner is with her at the hospital, so I am trying to just let them be and wait until she is ready to contact me. Jesus. Hoping it's not extremely serious. Hopefully they are home by now and the silence is simply life with a newborn, first days...
If it's not a retained placenta what could it be?

why is it unlikely to be retained placenta?
2 of my friends have had that, after birthing in a hospital and having the placenta checked.
it can, and does, happen.

justlookatthatbooty · 16/11/2011 21:02

She's home!
It's a haematoma blocking the urethra.
All are ok, and hoping to avoid surgery.
