Just found out that meptid is an option at the hospital I am due to give birth in.

Can anyone tell me more about it or of their experience with it as I am finding conflicting info on the net. SOme people say it has no side effects for baby as it doesn't cross the placenta whereas others say it has similar side effects to pethidine.

Bit confusing!

Thanks

I was told it was the posh version of pethedine.

Available for homebirths only, although I couldn't get any (or pethedine for that matter)

I wonder what makes it posh? Is it like coke over speed?!! Probably a cost issue I would think...

hmmm

I had Meptid for 3 of my births. 1st one 13 years ago. My cousin had her first baby and scared me with her stories of being out of it on Pethadine, so I spoke to the midwife at the hospital and she told me to ask for Meptid. It is almost the same as the pethidine without the loss of control sensations, it does not affect the baby at all. I had an injection in my thigh and then forgot all about it for a few days until I saw the bruise when I got home.
I made sure I asked for it with my second 10 years ago and they had to go off and make sure that they had some.

MY 3rd son is 2 1/2 and I was sure that things would have moved on, but when I asked about the Meptid the young midwife didn't know about it at all but the more mature one did, and explained to her that it was used mostly for homebirths now as it had no side effects, but if it was requested they would give it to you.
All three births were just meptid and gas and air, the first included an episiotomy and ventouse. And I would have requested it this time too but ended up with a crash section.

Thank you both. I like the "without the loss of control sensations" ` that is one of my concerns. I want to remain in a little bit of control (well at least be able to make decisions to some extent)
