WWYD - prev shoulder dystocia

Hi, I'm 36 weeks pregnant with DC3. Dd1 was 9lb 11oz and there were complications during the birth. Basically shoulders got stuck emergency button pressed and episiotomy performed and after quite a long time they managed to get her out using a ventouse. She needed to be resuscitated and was all very scary and traumatic. Thankfully she's a healthy 10yr old now but suffered with PND I think as a result.

Had DS1 5 yrs ago. Was induced early so he wouldn't be as big. He was born 6 days before due date weighing 8lb 13oz. Birth fine, no problems.

Am going for a growth scan tomorrow. Am worried it won't be accurate and I'll be fobbed off that he's average size and it'll all be fine. I'm also worried that it wasn't a size thing but my DD has a larger bone structure than my DS and this was a factor. I've never really entertained the idea of a cs but am I selfish for this? I know I would struggle to convince consultant to do if that would be what I would rather do.

Sorry for long post. Hope I make sense! Am really worried, not sleeping and have a constant anxious knot in my stomach!

Why is going for a c-section selfish? It's not even remotely selfish. You are thinking about putting the baby first - that's UNSELFISH in my book. NICE guidelines have changed on caesarean sections and they should now respect your wishes.

Do what you feel is best for you - don't be badgered by anyone. You live with the consequences so its your choice.

Best of luck though :)

Have you got a consultant? Why do you thunk you'd struggle to convince them? Where do you plan to give birth.

I think you need to speak to them quickly - because a CS might be re better option. As you say the growth scan might say one thing but you might not believe it. You don't want to go into labour with that thought.

I think you need to make an appointment with your consultant midwife to go though your notes. I wonder whether you laboured on your back stuck to the bed. There is a difference between bed dystocia (caused by laying on your back compressing the sacrum) and true shoulder dystocia which involves internal manouvers to help dislodge the stuck shoulders.

If I were you I'd try and get hold of your notes and get someone to look through them with you. Speak to a midwife rather than an obstetrician.

My SIL had a similar experience, and she is having c section this time round - there is nothing selfish about it at all. Her consultant agreed with her that it would be the safest option.

I had sd with ds1. Needed mcroberts and suprapbic pressure. He was flat but ok at 5 mins.

Ds 2 looked big and consultant basically said to me 1/10 change of another sd and 1/100 of dead baby. He said if I was his daughter he would suggest cs and so that's what I did.

Ds3 I had appt in antenatal clinic to discuss cs at 36.5 weeks but night before appt went into labour and ended up with nvd. He was much smaller though.

I would play it by ear really and talk to midwives and consultants. Fwiw the midwives were more nervous about ds3 than consultant and not at all keen for me to have vbac.

I am now pregnant again and who knows. Would prefer vd but if another massive term baby would do what they think safest.

Well have been for scan and baby measuring average for dates. I do feel a little smaller this time but who knows! Have decided to go for induction at 39 weeks. That way baby won't be huge (hopefully) plus having given birth to 2 babies before all will be a little easier! Thanks everyone.
