Is this weird? DS born on 14th September. It's gone pink and pale a few times but keeps going back to red. Not bright red, a kind of murky red.

Got my 8 week check next week but am just wondering if I should make an appt before then?

I dont' have a temperature or anything I don't think it can be an infection

I wouldn't wait. Phone your GP or the ward or your midwife or HV. I doubt you will relax until you have spoken to someone

I had this until about 6 weeks, when it stopped pretty quickly after a piece of 'something' came out. I did check with my midwife several times, who said as long as there was no smell and no large clots, and it is gradually getting lighter, then is ok. However, I would get it checked just to be on the safe side, as 7 weeks is quite a long time.

thanks eagle and mighty. It's gone red again today Confused No clots or anything though. Am going to a bfeeding clinic tomorrow so will ask HV about it then. thanks for replying

I had this with DD1. They didn't treat it as unusual until around 9 weeks. Then I was referred for an ultrasound. Turned out I had a tiny bit of retained placenta, smaller than pinky finger. Had a D&C when DD1 was 12 weeks old and bleeding finally stopped at 14 weeks.

I had no fever or infection just my body was trying to flush out the retained placenta hence bleeding continuing.

Definitely worth getting checked out.

Thanks Fresh it's got heavier today and there were tiny clots in it. I called the GP but he didn't seem too concerned. Said it could be an infection and to wait till next week when I have my 8 week check. I did have problems with my placenta coming out though.

What did the HV say?

Dont have any experience of this after birth, but afterva mc. It was retained placenta and the could see this on a scan. Don't take wait and see forcan answer next week, 8 weeks too long , you need all your energy to be mum!

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 04/11/2011 19:14

How is your bf going? If your milk supply is a bit sluggish I would say you have some retained placenta which needs fixed asap!

Maybe also ask at your 8 week check next week to get your iron levels check via blood test. I was already on an iron supplement after the delivery with DD1 for another reason but the prolonged bleeding and breastfeeding would have affected my iron levels had I not already been on a supplement.

Thanks for your comments, I am breastfeeding but milk supply seems ok so I don't think it can be retained placenta, or can it? I did have a few tiny clots last night but they were only a millimetre or so across. Today it seems lighter again, but I noticed whilst going to the toilet that red drops were coming out (gross, sorry) so obviously it's still happening.

The HV just said to call the GP, and the GP said they may want to take swabs for infection but he was happy that it can wait till next thurs when I have my postnatal check.

I had no milk supply issues either but may have been because I only had a tiny bit of placenta retained but enough for my body to want to flush it out.

I had my DD1 in Australia and over there the mum gets a 6 week check. My OB wasn't worried about it then just told me to call back if it was still going at 8-9 weeks. My GP, when DD1 had her 8 week check, said similar that if still going at 9-10 weeks contact my OB to get a referral for an ultrasound.

It was nice when I had the next 2 babies and it stopped after about a month : ) You do get fed up the constant bleeding.
