Positive Induction Stories Please

I have just been given date today for induction on the 3rd of January - I have read bits and bobs about this but it is becomming more of a possible reality so I would like to know more.
Please post positive induction experiences or bits of constructive advice.
I am feeling low after not being able to have sweep done today and being told I am a high risk induction cos is his head isn't down in pelvis after all but slightly to the left - which is different to what three other midwives have told me over the last two months at various checks.

Enid -we cross posted.... this is what i feel women need to be ready to hear.... 1st time mum who have inductions have SUCH a high rate of sections - that is what drives section rates up - and forceps/ventouse it is sad.... especially when they are not so overdue.... maybe wrong place to post this !

FairyTaleinNewYork · 31/12/2005 20:28

i was induced with the drip with dd1 as my waters broke but i didnt progress fast enough although i was 2cm, , was horrible so wont go there.

with dd3 (i had a natural labour 2nd time round), i was due to be induced 2 weeks early due to having gestional diabetes. i went to the hospital and iwas already 3cm dilated (i think, may have been 4cm lol) so moved down to delivery suite where i had my waters broken (ARM). about 3hours later if that, dd3 was born. just had gas and air, and was standing and walking about throughout most of the labour. i'd love another labour like that. in fact dd2+3 labours were both easy, and ithink if left to it and not pushed into induction with dd1, the labour would've been easier and faster.

babygibbon · 31/12/2005 21:01

BBE specifically wants cheering up and some positive thoughts rather than a long discussion on whether or not she should be induced.

I'm being induced at 40+10 rather than hanging on as well. I could go longer, I'm sure, but I have concerns (e.g. the size of the baby which by midwife reports is a whopper) and I believe that I'm putting both my baby and me in danger if we hang on too much longer. I'm showing absolutely no signs of going into labour naturally and I'm not a first time mum either.

Yes, there is an increased risk of intervention, but after 41/2 weeks there are other risks to consider if you aren't induced.

Factual points against induction are interesting and valid but would probably be better on another thread which BBE and others can choose to read if they wish.

QueSerahSerah · 31/12/2005 21:21

Pupuce, there is no doubt you know your stuff, but if you read the initial post as BBE herself has mentioned, you will know it is the wrong place to post the stuff you wrote, and yet you still carry on. You seem to be just making a point now and it seems incredibly insensitive.

pupucelovesruDOuLaph · 31/12/2005 21:34

Queserah... no problem but i do feel this is slightly mislesading : "the biggest positive is getting the baby at the end of it by hook or by crook"

I am bowing out.... after all I have been at births which were induce at the mother's request and they ended well. I'll leave it at that.

tribpot · 31/12/2005 22:08

The thread title is "positive induction stories please". And surely, by hook, crook, mechanical crane or teleporting device, the biggest plus is that baby emerges at the end of it.

Every woman I have known (including me) who was induced with their first didn't end up with a section, but I wouldn't claim that to be a representative sample, just the luck of the draw.

In my own case, I was happy to be induced to avoid dying. Or to avoid the 'virtually dying' labour my mother (also pre-eclamptic) had with me. I delivered without forceps/ventouse, btw. Sure, making an informed choice is about having the facts, but equally bigbaubleeyes is wanting some reassurance that her experience is normal. She deserves that without being made to feel bad about it.

bigbaubleeyes · 01/01/2006 00:45

Dear all thanks for support - I would like to explain that I purposefully wanted positive induction stories purely cos I was aware of all the other stuff which PUCE has mentioned and I am not ignorant of these facts - as you will know MN'ers people are always quick to tell you 'this n that' and its not always positive.

I am an eternal worrier and I thought such a thread would help me keep balance and perspective as we approach what still seems likely to be an induced birth!

PUCE I have read some of your other posts and had gathered that you are a doula and have much experience but the fact you have been posting on a website for six years is of little merit. My DH did look up more about Bishops Scores as result of your earlier post - he says he will ask about this as result, there was never any dispute over what seemed like a lot of info - just the perspective and thread it has been given on.

ANYWAY this thread has provided a wealth of info so far for myself and others also - I know there are two other Mummies to be induced on the 3rd of Jan and one other to follow just after

Jaysfirst · 01/01/2006 14:35

i agree BBE!!!

Thanks for this thread, to be honest i hadnt even given being induced a second thought, ( i am a first timer) i have never heard of any bad stories surrounding the experience, although when i told my friend last night that i had an induction date, she kinda screwed up her face and said 'ouch' so it did set me thinking. I have read throguh the comments and posts on here and have to say it as helped give me some information so i can be more prepared!

Hang in there BBE i am right with you babe!

bigbaubleeyes · 02/01/2006 17:45

I'm still here so it looks like induction will be ging ahead for tomorrow - I am sad that i havn't gone into labour myself but Dh and I have weighed up and we are ready for tomorrow - and yes TRIBOT we want the positive induction where you get a baby at the end of it!!!

Good lock to the other mummies who are due in tomorrow also.

tribpot · 02/01/2006 17:52

Good luck for tomorrow! All the best.

merryberry · 02/01/2006 17:58

good luck love, have a gorgeous baby and a happy delivery

PeachyClair · 02/01/2006 18:01

had a NIGHTMARE pg with ds1- pre-eclampsia, hyperemesis the lot. However the (early) induction was fine, absolutely no worse than the other two labours I've had since. Pessaries were used, started in morning, went into labour overnight and ds born at 7 the next evening. gas and air, pethidine but no epidural.

No stitches.

Was told induction would take 4 days () load of rubbish!

PeachyClair · 02/01/2006 18:05

tribpot- better than going the eclamptic way isn't it? I felt so much healthier after!. My sister also had (extremely) severe PET- they had ordered a c section but she refused and had a successful induction. I nearly died, ds1 almost died during pg, nephew was in NICU for a month, sister still on medication 2 years later...
induction is a blessing

tribpot · 02/01/2006 20:16

PeachyClair, as I've mentioned earlier, my pre-eclampsia was brought on by ds as a favour so I would have longer to recover before going to my friends' wedding So v pleased, and I must say, I was even more pleased to skip the pessary and go straight to waters breaking; I was in on the Sunday for bp monitoring and blood tests and the woman in the bed opposite me had her first pessary whilst I was there. I remember her saying "it's getting quite painful now" and her whole family taking absolutely no notice and carrying on reading the paper and stuff, I really wanted to go over and shout "YOU HAVE TO LEAVE NOW, SHE WANTS TO LABOUR IN PEACE!".

I came in on Tuesday morning to be induced, she was still there. I gave birth to ds on Wednesday morning and was up and walking around by about 10 a.m. - she saw me in the corridor and nearly cried when she realised I had had my baby and she was still there.

Anyway, I think my only regret was that they didn't give me longer to establish labour after the waters breaking before it was time to crack out the syntocinon, but of course I was technically high risk, so the priority was to get things moving.

Yours and your sister's labours sound pretty grim, thank goodness all is basically okay now, sorry to hear your sister is still on medication.

Anyway BBE hopefully you will not read this until after your induction, which I sincerely hope will not last as long as the woman in my hospital!

bigbaubleeyes · 03/01/2006 10:06

UNBELIEVABLE MY INDUCTION HAS BEEN POSTPONED TIL TOMORROW - after being left confused and upset by docotr last week and having to seek reassurance elsewhere (v nice MW) and told we are high risk we are v v v upset and angry - we off out to find some fabric so I can start my patchwork playmatt this afternoon. I am disgusted but have spoke to a V nice MW from delivery unit and she has explained more - I know there must be women who in there and need priority. DH and I have questioned about the care we have recieved lately and wondered about going private next time.

Oh no! How incredibly frustrating for you and dh.

Fingers crossed for you that it all happens tomorrow. xx

cathyspam · 03/01/2006 10:32

i was given an induction date for DS2 (8 days early) and the couple of days before I ate curry, had sex, walked up and down stairs etc because I didn't want a long, drawn out affair and it worked. I had only one pessary and established labour was only 4 hours long and 10 mins pushing and I managed with just water and gas and air. A big change from DS1's birth which started naturally but had a long, slow labour, artificially ruptured membranes and an epidural. I am sorry you have been put off until tommorow - you must be soo frustrated by this point. I hope that it al goes great for you - let us know your news! (((hugs)))

bigbaubleeyes · 04/01/2006 16:21

INDUCTION DELAYED NOW ITS A C SECTION!!!!!!

OMG we have been sent home again after being assessed by consultant and told our baby is breach opted out of turning thing and have gone for CS tomorrow - thank-you so much for all the advice I know others have used it from Decmeber thread but i won't be using it after all!!! I'm still feeling quite positive becasue I know it will be over by tomorrow and hopefully they have got the sex right!!!

Apparently the breach presentation is unusual and the consultant who specialises in breaches who discovered (still had to check with scan) it said it would have been hard to spot - it does make you think all thos people who have palpated bump lately and never spotted it (but he could have moved) anyway its like 'Groundhog Day' in this house at moment so we are going to try again tomorrow.

If you want to offer any last minute advice for CS hop onto the new thread!!! .

I'm being induced starting on Tuesday evening and haven't been particularly looking forward to it being a first timer and having heard some bad stories. I'll be 37 +4 on Tuesday when I go in and am being induced early because I am type 2 Diabetic and have now also developed Obstetric Cholestasis.
My step-sister was induced at 38 weeks with her first baby 3 months ago due to a large ovarian cyst causing problems and her induction went really well. She went into labour after the first pessary and had a healthy baby girl by normal delivery. So am hoping things go as smoothly for me.
