James Paget or Norfolk and Norwich Hospital? Anyone had experience in either?

Hi everyone.

I am currently pregnant with my second child and am wondering where to have it! We went to James Paget for the first one and had such a terrible time throughout pregnancy and the birth was actually pretty horrific. They were disorganised, didn't communicate or co-operate with each other, repeatedly lost my notes, left me in a mess, it was horrible. However, since then they have spent a couple of million building a new birthing centre on site although there seems to be little information out there on their facilities or what drugs they offer. I've never been to Norfolk and Norwich, I've only heard from others about what its like and I know that it is relatively new.

Can anyone else share their experiences at either or both hospitals?

i had all 5 of mine at n&n and had great experiences :)

i have a friend who had her elder ones at james pageant and then had horrible experience wiht late miscarriage there and they treated her appallingly so she had baby no3 at n&n and is now expecting no4 and will have that one at n&n as well, they were fabulous wiht her.

my first was born at the old norwich hospital and the other 4 at the new one, they are 9, 6, 3 and 10mths so its not that new, i had very positive experiences including a water birth. very happy with my treatment there :)

Thank you for sharing! JPH were truly awful. I don't know anyone who have used the new birthing centre there but the way I look at it, they might change the equipment but the midwives will be the same...

Thanks again. Smile

Hello
My name is Jayne Utting and I am one of the senior midwives at the James Paget Hospital. I have been asked to contact you by the Head of Midwifery to offer the opportunity to meet and discuss your pregnancy and birth experiences at the hospital as it is never our intention for people who use our service to feel they have had a negative experience. We offer a debriefing service where you can either come into the hospital or meet at your home with your hospital records available to discuss what happened. We really value the feedback anyone ha about the service and always try to ensure we respond. If you would like the opportunity to do this then please contact me either via this message as I am not i the office much next week as it is half term. We can then arrange to meet if that is what you feel you would like to do.
Many thanks
Jayne

The N & N delivery suite are good but very busy, postnatal ward is a bit variable. The n &n also have a new midwife led birth centre. The N & N saved my life during my pre eclampsia because, as a teaching hospital, they have excellent clinicians. I wouldn't hesitate to give birth there again. They also handled my appendicitis well, so have arguably saves my life twice.

I had a horrific experience at JP.

I'd go to the N&N

Oh, and when I wanted to discuss what had happened, PALS couldn't find my notes. Joy.

I'd like to say I've had two good experiences at JPH but looking back at it, dd1's birth was not good for several reasons. She was back to back and nobody noticed even with a heart monitor on. Then whilst all this was being decided my epidural ran out, and I was left in utter agony with a nine pound baby stuck the wrong way round in my pelvis. I had an emcs and the whole thing was just a nightmare. I put it down to bad luck at the time but after speaking to other mums who had babies turned etc the general consensus was that it could have been avoided with earlier intervention or closer monitoring.

Having said that I decided half way through my second pregnancy to try for a natural birth again and it went fine. Dd2 was the right way round though!

I will say that the antenatal care couldn't have been better. Well except for the little foreign nurse that didn't understand I'd had a cs and kept trying to make me get up and feed my baby. Apart from that everybody was lovely.

Also, the JPH have a dedicated Breastfeeding support team of trained councillors who are all absolutely brilliant. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have successfully bf dd2. They would text day or night and visit at home whenever you needed them.

And I have also read in the local paper that if the N&N is full they will turn you away.

I had an awful birth experience at the N & N. The midwife was clueless, the staff were careless and neglectful. I won't go into the horrible details, but I was left with PTSD as a result of the whole ordeal.

Hi, just thought id bring this thread up again incase it can set anybodies mind at ease who is about to give birth a james paget. I remember a few weeks back when i was pregnant, reading this and shitting myself because i had no alternative but to have my baby here, but i can hand on heart say that i met the most wonderfull midwives there!
although i had to completely abandon my birth plan (lovly waterbirth, all natural with my favourite calming music in the background) i ended being constantly monitored, had my labour started by a drip and just generally rather traumatic, the midwives wer just so calm and supportive and really helped make it bearable! i was there for a good 4 days and met many of the midwives on delivery suite, i never came across anyone who wasnt willing to listen and help me in any way that they could! they wer understanding for all my extra needs ( needle phobic) but they wer also firm with me when it came to crunch time, they probobly saved my daughters life with there say it the way it is attitude and i am truly gratefull to all of them, im really sorry for all of you who have had bad experiences there but i just wanted to let you know that there are good experiences too! :)
