Physio straight after childbirth?

Hi all - my best friend gave birth a few days ago and is feeling very sore (forceps and episiotomy)!!!. I had some very helpful physio on the hospital post natal ward - some sort of tens machine near my bottom(!) that made the bruising etc more comfortable. My friend would be interested in giving that a try. Anyone have any idea what sort of physio I had and how my friend could access this?

I had that as well, although they called in laser treatment. I'm sure her midwife should be able to organise it. I had forceps and epi, so she has my total sympathy - I could barely walk!

possibly ultrasound?

your friend needs to get a referral to a women's health physio. if she is still in hospital, they should arrange it. otherwise she will need her gp to do it. i recommend that the gp faxes the referral to the women's health physio dept at the hospital and makes it clear in the letter that your friend is recently post-natal - that should expedite her appointment.

another option would be to find a private physio. if she is in s. london, i can recommend someone.

hth.

btw - cost of a private physio apt in london is c. £40.

thanks very much bossykate, I'll pass your advice on. my friend has been discharged from hospital, and I don't think her midwife was very helpful when she asked her about it. My friend is based in St. Albans, so N.London is probably a bit too far out of her way. She would be willing to pay to have it privately.

Hello, I think BossyKate has already given your answer? She needs a referral from her GP - give them a ring and they can fax through. If there are cancellations she might be able to get an appointment in a day or two. They are usually very good.

this will take you to a search engine to find specialised chartered physios in the area.

Thanks very much mp and bk.

no problem. btw - your friend can contact the women's health physio dept at her local hospital herself if necessary and ask them what she needs to do to be seen at the earliest opportunity. i did this and they were so helpful. best of luck to your friend.
