Can you recommend a positive thinking type book about childbirth?

I couldn't sleep so I've been browsing on Amazon for books on childbirth as I'm nearly 36 weeks pregnant with my second and cacking it. But... there are two and a half thousand books on pregnancy on Amazon! So does anyone have any recommendations? My criteria are:

  • Not American (since I'm in the UK) or relating to childbirth in the States Not too hippyish, although some earth mother stuff is OK (I quite like S Kitzinger for example, although I think she talks rubbish sometimes*)
  • Not negative or full or criticism of midwifery/the health service in general, I know it's sometimes rubbish but I'm looking for positive thinking type stuff, not a state of the nation type tome
  • Must be able to order it asap
  • I have Birthing From Within and it's a bit too hippy chick for me (drawings of cave women etc., to give you an idea!)
  • Can't stand Miriam Stoppard so nothing too preachy either (none of this don't eat ham stuff thanks)

Am I asking for the impossible? I want somethng with a title like "how to get over fear of childbirth (even if you've done it before) with lots of positive thoughts and mind exercises that will help you get through it and cope really well without going into hosptial and having full on drugs" Are there any books that really helped you and if so, what are they? TIA, any suggestions gratefully received

Don't ask for much huh?

What about an Empowered Childbirth book?

(I haven't read them, I'm procrastinating at the moment and googled that page.)

JJ's book is one I have not read but I do know the author. She trains doula's in Devon (that should remind you of things WWW).
I can ask my fellow doulas what they thought of it and let you know

Mind over labour by Carl Jones is good

www, I recommend a book I found invaluable "Labour Pain" by Nicky Wesson. It is a bit 'hippy chick' as you call it, it is also a bit down on the health service, which I know you don't want but frankly I can't recommend this book enough.

Ah winnie, Nicky Wesson wrote Home Birth, which I've got and like, so I think I would like it.

I liked Janet Balaskas too. But maybe MI has the best idea!!

I really liked the Shiela Kitzinger book. It made me feel v positive, and I underlined bits and passed it on to DP and my other birth partner.

JulieF · 22/10/2003 22:21

Mears would you also recommend Janet Balaskas waterbirth book?
