What's the most/least realistic childbirth scene in a film or TV programme?

I was watching Knocked Up the other night, and it seemed ok ish, I mean nothing like my labour, and very medical, but perhaps that's just what birth is like in the USA?

My nomination for least realistic: Phoebe giving birth to triplets in Friends. Vaginally with minimal pain relief and HCPs around

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Totally agree about the Friends births, but Rachel was the only time I noticed someone on TV/film still having a bump of sorts after giving birth. Nothing like my 6-months-pregnant-with-twins extravaganza, but at least she didn't have a washboard stomach the day after leaving hospital.

I think the 'newborn' baby being too old has to be forgiven to a certain extent, though ideally it shouldn't look as if it is already walking and talking!

Nine Months really is an awful film. Daphne's tights-on birth remains legendary though.

You don't get a childbirth scene but Marge Gunderson's pregnancy in Fargo is pretty realistic - throwing up in the snow, waddling around in an ungainly manner and eating like a horse.

Eightieschick - this because Marge in Fargo was 7 months pregnant in RL when she made the film!

EightiesChick · 12/09/2011 19:59

breathedeeply I never knew that!

CheerfulYank · 12/09/2011 20:57

I love Marge in Fargo!

Though I don't love people assuming that all Minnesotan people talk like that even though we KIND OF do :o

If you're talking about Frances McDormand, she has never been that pregnant. Her only child is adopted and there's no information indicating she lost a child that was that far along.

Before giving birth I remember watching Carla being rushed into theatre in 'scrubs' and saying, 'like it's really that quick!' Then I had to go into theatre. Yep, it really is!

Just an episode, but from Coupling 'Get me a FUCKING epidural!!'

Moochops89 · 17/12/2014 14:45

Kat's twin birth made me laugh. The Midwife could tell she was fully dilated just by lifting up the sheets and glancing in the general direction!

Also, every birth on Hollyoaks! When Teresa had myra-pocahontas the other week the baby had a perfectly formed belly button when they handed her to her mum!
And when Diane had her twins, the Midwife was so batty it was making me rage!

And another vote for any birth on Friends.

halfdrunkmulledwine · 17/12/2014 14:52

I don't think I've ever seen a realistic one! Woman starts having contractions and needs to go to hospital straight away. Five minutes later a six week old baby is born.

EstRusMum · 18/12/2014 19:20

Haven't anyone seen "what to expect when you're expecting" where this model type girl sneezes and has her baby? This thread is obviously from ages ago, but few latest posters should remember it. This one is definitely the least realistic. Grin
Haven't actually seen any realistic one though.

Best-Sarah Lancashire in "Sons and Lovers"-not over-dramatised but she actually manage to change colour from flushed to very pale.

So many rubbish ones its hard to choose!

squizita · 23/12/2014 21:18

TV quick labours are nothing like real quick labours. My body dumps all the oxytocin in one massive dose. Its quick but it ain't pretty!!!
Like Alien - nothing there/all torn up with something wiggling about. Grin

Though I did still have my make up on at the end, like many tv mums!
