Hi
Thought I'd share what happened to the lovely ladies who contributed to the post.
I was right, contractions started after that 'show' at 6pm on Tues the 6th.
Went on for two days. In two days I only dialated 1cm (joy). Baby turned back to back during this period too - staying on my fours or hanging from the ceiling wouldn't shift it for the life of me (or hers!)
Weds night I went to hospital for some pethidine to see if it would give me the chance to sleep a little.
It didn't make me sleep but bizarrely, I got from 1cm to 5cm in 3 hrs.
Got sent to the lovely birthing pool with the most amazing midwife ever. Stayed there for 7hours on gas and air. Waters broken artificially.
2hrs out of the pool. Still 6cm dialated.
This is now close to Friday Lunch time. They gave me an epidural and placed me on the drip. This was the nicest part because I didn't feel pain and they gave me a 4pm deadline.... I was happy to know I would have the baby then one way or another.
4pm arrived and I was still 7cm.
Consultant tried to argue the toss with me that I should wait a few hours to see if I could dialate a little more. I put my foot down and demanded a cesarean.
Midwife afterwards congratulated me for sticking to my guns. Daughter borne at 17.29hrs on Friday the 9th A little distressed, having passing meconium, needing help to breath etc buth healthy.
Surgeon said that there was no way that baby could have been delivered vaginaly - the womb was contracting back / closing down due to stress / long labour which formed a bottle neck ring right in the middle of it.
Sounds like a horrific experience but I take it light hearted and I can say that I tried almost everything a part from episiotomy, forceps and ventouse (thank GOD!!!)
My next baby I would certainly choose an elected cesarean ;)
And for those who tried the drip with no other pain relief other than Gas and Air: Respect Indeed! I haven't tried the pain but I could see in the chart how much fast they come in a short space of time and it musn't be pleasant.
