Hi,just wondered if anyone has had another baby after a bad tear? My sons were 6lbs 6oz and 6lbs 13oz and their births were fairly easy.My dd aged 16 months was bigger at 9lbs 14oz so i tore badly.Think the doctor said it was a 3rd degree tear almost to the anal margin?? It has taken me until the last 3/4 months to feel normal again as my pelvic floor was non existant and i have a slight prolapse.I am now pg with a surprise baby and i am so scared of what could happen during delivery.Anyone any advice or had it happen to them?

There are people on here who have had babies after a bad tear. Hopefully someone will be on here with better advice. I would have thought that you should be referred to a consultant to discuss whether the tear was so bad that you should be offered an elective section to prevent risk of further damage.

I had a third degree tear with my first and then a second with baby number 2 but the second tear was great, I could walk and felt like nothing had happened

dont worry - i had a bad 3rd degree tear with DS1 which went right through all the muscle and the whole perineum (tmi?) and i eventually felt normal after about 6 months - 3 months later I found out I was pregnant again and ds2 who was the same weight as ds1 arrived leaving only a fairly standard 2nd degree tear which healed pretty quickly - i wouldn't say i am 100% the way i was before but not incontinent - maybe just cant hold it quite as long but no accidents! Try not to worry about it.

Dont think size has anything to do with it. If you tore once you wont necesserily (ok how many c'c and s;s should there be?)
tear again

Agalch, I am worried about this as well, i had a 3rd degree tear with 1st pg, )dd shot out like a champagne cork!) and i am now 5 weeks pg with my 2nd...tbh the healing after 1st wasnt too bad, its the worry of being incontinent if it happens again that really bothers me .

I think i need to speak to my mw about it all, and will probably go for a episiotomy if needed with this one.

xx

had stitches with 3 of mine all 8lb and under.
No stitches with last two 9lb 15 and 10lb 2

I had DS2 after a 3rd degree tear with DS1 (who was 10lb!). I'd had an ultrasound scan around 10 weeks after delivery to check the repair and was told it had healed well enough if I wanted a natural delivery next time ("next time - who are they kidding?!" I thought to myself). Anyway, I had an "electve" episiotmy with DS2 when the tear looked vulnerable to ensure that any further tearing went away from that area (I wrote this into my birth plan and talked it through with the midwife when I was in labour). Again, all healed well with no problems.

(don't know how "far" the original tear went but it took a long time to repair in theatre!)

Thanks everyone
feel a bit better now.My mw did mention a possible elective episiotomy.tbh i would rather that than a bad tear.will speak to mw/docs at booking in at hospital and see what they suggest.prefer to avoid a cs as my dd will only be nearly 2 and im not a great healer, every wound or op has become infected and needed restitched on occasion so natural for me if poss.
thanks again

great thread, its helped put my mind at ease (a bit!) had a 3rd degree tear with dd who was 8lb 6oz, had to go to theatre for a repair, was very painfull for weeks and weeks after, and only felt 'normal' after about 7 months, i am now trying for another baby, and im scared of giving birth already, really dont want to go through any sort of tear again, and if i am offered a c section, will def think about accepting it. will prob hate that too as im a bit wimp

lanismum · 10/12/2005 14:39

err, big wimp
