Hi all, I just found out on Sunday that I am pregnant (!!!) and had it confirmed at the doctor's office today. WOW! :)
I live right in between Dundee and Kirkcaldy and will, apparently, be able to choose which I go to to give birth. I should say that I am an American, so I am not used to how all this works here in the UK. (Well, I get it that the physical act of giving birth will be the same---it's the details that are messing with me at the moment ;)
I was quite shocked that my appointment lasted all of 10 minutes today, and in that time the doctor seemed to have made the decision that Ninewells was the way to go---but she didn't really give me a sense of why she thought that other than to say, "...well, it's very factory-like, but you''ll have all the equipment there you might need". Well, I guess that's one way of looking at it.
I've looked up the stats (www.birthchoiceuk.com/BirthChoiceUKFrame.htm?LocStatFrame.htm?Hospitals/S407.htm), and it looks like there are more interventions going on at Ninewells than Forth Park. This leads me to believe that because they are bigger (and presumably busier) there is a desire to get women in and out of there as quickly as possible (but, of course, I don't know that to be true from experience). This is exactly what I would like to avoid. I am really, really (really, really) hoping to do this naturally.
I should also say that I am a bit nervous that at 38, I will not even be able to be in a midwife-led unit. (There is a post from 2009 on this site that says the cut-off at Ninewells is 35, but I can't find any info about a cut-off age in Kirkcaldy).
Does anyone out there have any recent experience with either hospital? I feel really overwhelmed because this is my first real encounter with the NHS, and I just want to be sure that I can make an educated decision. Thanks so much for any feedback/advice you might have!
