Hii all,

I am pregnant with No 2 - not due til april so am being WAY ahead of myself BUT.... I had no 1 at the portland but my consultant has now retired. Can anyone recommend any consultants at private wings in london and also how much do they charge for whole package?

Another reason for greater intervention / csections in private births is that I would guess that the mums are older.

In my circle of similar 40 something relatively well-off mums - the ones who had their babies younger went to the NHS and the ones who had them when they were older went private. ie. the younger ones had babies before their/DHs career allowed them to be able to afford a private birth and the older ones had babies once we had established careers etc IYSWIM.

my obstetrician with my last pregnancy assured me that his role to to ensure that my baby comes out without any problems and i am remain in good health - both of which happened!

I think private obstetricians by nature prefer to do C as they can book it in and they see it as a less risky process... That said i had my daughter naturally, had an episiotomy (was about to tear badly) and was very happy with the whole process.

If you want to stick to the Portland I hear good things about Mr Armstrong.

Incidentally I didn't get the impression at all those two doctors preferred a CS - Nick Wales' 3 kids were born at home so he is well aware that women may prefer natural birth - and KD will tell you "your body, your baby". I had one VB already and at no point did he raise the possibility of a CS!

Another vote for Nick Wales and Keith Duncan here too. Nick delivered my first two children via c/s and was great throughout.

I had fantastic experience with Dr Kumar Kunde, londonpregnancycare.com/. I will be definitely choosing him for my second baby :)
He is usually seeing patients at St. Thomas Hospital's private maternity unit - Lansdell suit. Most importantly he is easily accessible and spends time with his patience. Given it was my first pregnancy it was important to me as I did not know where to go for an advice. I had C-Section and can say that I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of operation and how quickly I recovered after that - he must be a great surgeon as well!. The scar is neat and tidy (he uses most advanced techniques and my local midwifes were surprised to see how neat it was :)). I actually went home after just 2 night at hospital after C-Section - just an indication how confident I felt in my recovery after the operation! Great after birth care as well, midwifes were always at standby and very helpful with all aspects starting from first breastfeeding, nappy change, how to sooth my little DD, etc. I chosen St. Thomas over Portland because they are top rated, there is a private wing with all the care you get in private healthcare and at the same time all the power of NHS (should something bad happen) is literally next door, no ambulance transfer required. Also, my husband stayed with me both nights I was there, standard package includes only 1 night, but things were quiet and midwifes let him stay for the second night too ;)

Honestly, what's wrong with you?? Now you've got a problem with women choosing private care?

I chose the Portland for my second baby. After I was denied pain relief during my excruciating 76 hour labour(a lot of which was spent at home-against my wishes because they wouldn't let me come to the ward) for my first child which left me with extreme sexual and psychological issues, I wanted CHOICE. After my vaginal birth and second degree tear left me with incontinence and forced me to have repair surgery,I wanted a C-SECTION.
I wanted to be able to choose to formula feed instead of being forced to breastfeed. I wanted the facility to be able to SLEEP for sometime while a nurse took care of the baby in the nursery.

That's why I went private because the NHS wouldn't respect my wishes nor did they take my postpartum issues seriously. I wanted a break from the NCB ideology that pervades the NHS. I wanted an obstetrician and not a midwife. I had the money to do it and I went ahead and did it. Is that a good enough reason for you?

You go on and on about choice but in every thread all you do is argue with women who choose differently than you did and boast about how you loved the pain of childbirth and had an 11 pound baby at home.

Just stop it.
