Burch's Colposuspension anyone?

Hi,
Have posted this in General Health, but often get better responses in Childbirth, so thought I'd stick it here too.
I have a variety of birth injuries and problems - cystocele, rectocele, detached puborectalis, adhesions, urinary stress incontinence - and I am coming close to deciding on the surgeries that I will be having.
Had urodynamics last week and I saw my gynae yesterday to discuss. He is up in the air about whether a Burch's colposuspension is appropriate to sort out the incontinence, or whether to do a polypropelene tension-free vaginal tape. There's pros and cons to both of these. At the moment I feel like I am willing to take the longer and more painful recovery time that comes with Burch's and the need for a second round of surgery (the prolapse stuff would need to be done separately) on the basis that there is more data that Burch's provides a good and pretty much permanent repair. Has anyone had a Burch's colposuspension? What was recovery like? How do you feel now? Were you offered an alternative and are you glad you chose Burch? If you have had Burch's, did you go on to have another pregnancy? Did the pregnancy mess up this repair?
Thanks everyone X

Hi Card, been away so this is my fist chance to catch up. Your lovely gynae sounds exactly that! You seem to have found a gem there, when is he planning on doing the first op?
Well done for getting your letter of complaint off, after what you have been through and the financial cost to you, I would seek legal advice once you have the reply with a view to getting some compensation.
Will you be having to have your next baby privately and will this lovely chap be able to do the ELCS?

It was so good to see you ending your last post "feeling much happier and calmer" - am very pleased for you. XX

Hi gail - hope you went somewhere nice Grin. Stinky weather where we are today.... We're going to do the first op towards the end of November. We've got some family bits and pieces dotted throughout September and October and DH has to go away on business to Miami mid-November, so much before then would be tricky. So what we though we'd do is go to NY before his Miami trip and then all of us fly down to Miami where he can do his conference on mobile telephony network capability (YAWN YAWN YAWN) and DD and I can catch some sun and go for walks on the beach. Then have the operation when we get back. Yes, if there is another baby, it will be private (better start saving now!) and my gynae will do the ELCS. Am really pleased that he can do it - after all this I don't think I'd want anyone else looking after me through another pregnancy.

I saw my orthopaedic surgeon yesterday (he realigned and injected my coccyx) and he's pleased with how things are going from his side of things. It was almost comical though - he kept looking at my MRIs and saying "So let me get this straight again - this was just one average sized baby that did this?!?!!!!!"

As I posted earlier, I have no idea what response my complaint letter will get. I am happy to have a meeting with them and "be assertive" if necessary [fierce face emoticon].

Thanks for checking in. XX

Hi, I have never ever joined these groups but as I am in recovery right now from a Burch Colposuspention (10 days ago) that was perform through my former C-Section scar I am happy to give advise and let you know what it's all like. My problem was a very weak bladder. My surgeon was the head of Gynae and Ob's in the country that I live in. He decided that this was the right operation for me due to success rate and the fact that is is a more substation and long term procedure etc etc This was all based on the severity of my problem and of course the age that I am (39) meaning I need it to last more years than other ladies. The actual problem was caused by my first childbirth in my 20's and got worse over the years. It took me 10 years to speak out about it and find help!

I can say something, that what ever procedure you have, you have to look after it. The hospital was full of women who after 2 year and one after 3 months had done themselves an injury and were back in hospital. Sometime the stronger procedure may not be the most comfortable or easiest to get over, but given that these ladies are back having more surgery you should think it all well through.

Good luck and feel free to ask me anything!

I am 4 weeks post op for a colopsuspension, I went into urinary retention after the suprapubic catheter was removed at nearly 3 weeks, so ended up in A&E having an urethral catheter replaced for a further week, this was removed on Monday, and my bladder doesn't want to work properly, I'm having to self catheterise now, I need to know this will get better 😔
