I am today 40+1 with number 2 and have been having contractions for 6 days although nothing painful. Had to go to hospital as midwife panicked and they said it would be out in 24 hours! That was 4 days ago!!! I had the show this morning and it was also large and clear with no blood at all. A friend said I had to call the hospital and let them know, or the midwife at least. Do I do this or do I wait for more pain? I am in mild pain now, more than has been in the last few days, but certainly not enough to be called 'labour'! Whats next?

Will do - thank you! Also - seeing as someone is finally on line - last night I had wet pants so I put a pad in and kept feeling like there was water coming out but obviously not much. With my ds it was the same except that it was lots and I knew about it over about 4 hours. This time it started last evening and was going till about 5am but wasn't enough to even change the pad in the middle of the night. could this be the hind waters seeping do we think?

As much as I would like to get excited, it really won't happen that fast - ds1 was 43 hours of hideousness! Hoping for better than that, but know what the pain has to feel like before you get to even three cm's and I know I'm probably not even dilated at all! Definately wasn't wee which is why I wondered if it was waters, it came from the wrong place for wee and it didn't look or smell like it or infact at all!

WidgetWB - DOn't bank on it!!!!

I went into the labour ward with mild backache I'd been having for about a week! I didn't really feel any contractions as such, but on examination I was 4cm dilated! I felt like such a fraud as I just wasn't in labour.

I stayed like that for about 6 hours until they broke my waters properly.... an hour later at my next internal exam I was 6cm. STILL not in any pain as such, just a bit of OOOOOO THAT WAS A BIT SORE!

All of a sudden the contractions came in massive waves.... 50 mins and 2 pushes later dd was born.

With your 2nd in CAN happen very quickly..... especially if your body is doing a lot of the work before hand without you even realising! You're mucus plug wouldn't come away and your waters wouldn't break if you were not dilating!

Have you phoned yet?????

Getting the pains for days before real labour is very common for second or subsequent births (IME). I had bad enough labour pains with my third to stop me sleeping yet it was days before true labour started.

Eventually I went to hospital because I was bored of sitting indoors in pain and I fancied some attention. I did not believe I was in real labour. Well, I got to hospital at 6ish and was told I was in labour, I can't remember how many cm dilated, but I was pleasantly surprised, and she was born at 9:20.

Your baby might be with you very soon! That said, I wouldn't ring up about the show but just wait until the pain increases. However, you must do what makes you feel most reassured.

WidgetWB · 06/12/2005 10:55

Sackache, I so so so wish that I could know that I will be like you and everyone else it seems and squeeze it out with hardly any pain and very little time, but I just know that I am not that lucky! I am totally dreading it, to the point that I would say terrified as this time I know what I am heading for and how awful it is! I am shaking like a leaf! No haven't rung yet - just sent ds1 to swings with new nanny for five minutes peace! Not even having to breathe differently through these contractions, just feel my tummy tensing and getting more uncomfortable to the point that I am noticing them being stronger. I so wish I could and will be like the rest of you - I promise to let you all know on 'childbirth' thread when I have it! THank you for your help - hugely appreciated!

WidgetWB - There is no reason why you won't have a much better experience this time. A bad labour isn't inevitable!

Oh and I might have said it was quick.... but it was BLOODY PAINFUL at the end!!!!

Good luck and trust you're body... its done this before!

SackAche · 06/12/2005 11:22

And must add...that it sounds like your waters have gone. You really should tell the midwives that! Go on woman.... do it now whilst you've got peace and quiet!

WidgetWB · 06/12/2005 12:17

I rang the antenatal day assessment unit and they said 'whatever'! Not interested till in proper pain although I didn't talk to a midwife, just the receptionist because I could hear her relaying it to the midwife! No more watery stuff, so can only assume that plug has gone and waters still yet to break. Pain getting margonally (sp!) worse, but nothing worth getting excited about! Will call them again if it gets worse, but will go in when in proper pain or waters break properly! Thanks for help.

How are you now WidgetWB?

MerlinsBeard · 06/12/2005 21:16

anyone any news from widget?

WidgetWB · 05/01/2006 10:05

So so sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you all! I had contractions mildly all day on 6th (day of original posting) and they got mildly stronger towards the evening but was still able to eat and think about going to bed. Went up to bed at 11pm and my waters broke (on the loo thankfully!)They were bright yellow so straight off to hosptial (St Thomas's, London) leaving puddles behind me as I went - literally! Contractions started in earnest at 12, epidural, pushing and out at 7.15am! Very lovely and short and positively easy compared to ds1!! I had Archie who was 7lbs 13oz and very lovely. Unfortunately I had him on a shift change so the midwives left me with the next midwife an hour later to stitch me up. Long story short, half an hour later I was whisked into theatre to have spinal block as I had a huge haematoma, bigger than gratefruit size in my left labia! Very sexy huh! Anyway, grossly it got so big that it burst from within so have now got a hideous selection of stitches down there along with various appointments with the consultant for the next three months! Thankfully my private health insurance kicked in and I was transferred to the private wing of the hospital, which was utter heaven - just wish I could have appreciated it more without so much pain. couldn't stand or sit down let alone walk for 4 days, but after that it all seemed to get better slowly but surely. Am fine now, just tired from both boys waking at night!!! Am going to start another thread in another section as need help with ds2 who has problems I don't know how to fix! Thanks hugely for all your support when I needed it, enormously helpful! Widget
