Natal Hypnotherapy CD

I have bought a Natal Hypnotherapy CD and listened to it twice now. Both times I have fallen asleep and not heard a thing. I honestly don't know what she says past breathing golden light into your lungs.

I don't know how I'm going to feel very positive about this birth if I don't know what she's saying.

Had anyone else experienced this but still gone on to have a positive birth? Particularly if your previous birth(s) were the opposite of positive.

I have this same problem! I manage to get a bit further than that but usually only to the beach - hopefully you'll know what I mean eventually!

Try listening to it in the morning when you are much more awake, although apparently you do take in what is said subconsciously so although you don't think it's effective it apparently does go in! Also try listening to the shorter version (track 3) a few times - you may have a bit more luck with that one!

I'm due any day now and I've been listening to it since about 24 weeks, only made it all the way through about 5 or 6 times. I'm feeling positive about it all though so thinking the relaxation of it has rubbed off on me!

KellyKettle · 17/08/2011 18:54

There's a beach? I just wake up when she tells me to Grin

I suppose I could put it in whilst cooking or something? Just listen to the words.

I did have a fantastic sleep.

It's good to know you're benefitting from it and feeling relaxed.

Fell asleep listening to it every night - and still managed a MUCH better birth than my first DC (hadn't heard of it then), even though this time round DD was 10lb 10 1/2!!!!!
Definately keep at it, and try and play it during the day too if you can - it is amazing how much your subconscious mind picks up on.

Hello

Im 36 weeks pregnant... i did pregnancy relaxation from weeks 16 - 32 (4 or 5 times a week) sometime i fell asleep but normally made it to the end, and i think i know the whole CD by heart.

Have been doing effective home birth preparation for about 4 weeks now. I think i have only managed to not fall asleep 2 or 3 times at most.
I cant help it either.
sometimes i wake up when told, but sometime not until quite a few minutes after its finished.
It took me weeks to actually get to the end having not fallen asleep!

A lady from my NCT class has found the same too!

nannyl · 18/08/2011 13:34

(and i normally fall asleep on or soon after the beach too!!!)

KellyKettle · 18/08/2011 14:29

Thanks! I'll give it another try this afternoon but DD had me up at 5am so I think I'll end up napping again.

Great to know it helped you in your birth mummy.

I suppose I was worried there might be some direction in there that I'm sleeping through "remember/visualise this when contractions do this"

I used NH for births of both DSs and think it is fantastic, had enjoyable pgs and very straightforward deliveries and believe NH played a big part Smile

I too fell asleep during the relaxation (probably more times than I stayed awake, especially with DS2).

I found it helpful to listen through each CD whilst not actually trying to relax i.e. sitting up and eyes open, to take in the content without drifting off.

Also DP and I listened together a couple of times too so he knew what it was about.

We also did an NH 'workshop' (2 days) pre DS1 instead of NCT and had a couple of refresher sessions pre DS2 which was brilliant.

Good luck Smile

Baby2b · 18/08/2011 16:51

Sorry to hijack, could someone give me the name of the cd or does anyone have a link to it?

tiddleypompom · 18/08/2011 16:58

Well timed thread - mine just arrived from amazon this morning. Haven't played it yet but did read the leaflet...

Baby2b Effective Birth Preparation - Self-hypnosis audio CD (3rd addition).

NCT leader said that the last birth she attended (as doula) was a natal-hypno birth and the labouring lady sat on her birthing ball and raised her finger every time she contracted. That was the only sign she made that she was actively labouring - no pain relief etc.

I expect to raise my finger during labour also, just perhaps not in quite the same fashion :o

Baby2b · 18/08/2011 17:04

Thank you Grin Pmsl at just raising a finger.

rosalux · 18/08/2011 17:17

Glad I'm not the only one having this experience! I think I've made it all the way through a couple of times, but have also been known to wake up and realise it's the end of track 3 Blush

KellyKettle · 18/08/2011 18:12

Haha Tiddly Grin

I can't believe I'm so sceptical about it. I am loving the relaxation but I can't stay awake. I suppose I just feel like I need to know what it's telling me.

I'll have a listen tomorrow morning whilst packing for camping.

Might be quite nice if I can sleep through labour....

I've never heard what's on track 3! One day I will stay awake until the end!

MagnumIcecreamAddict · 20/08/2011 11:58

I used NH for my first baby (now 14 months). Fell asleep many of the times I listened to it but did purposefully listen to it a couple of times when not tired.

For me it was fantastic - not a pain free birth but it doesn't promise that. I felt in control the whole way through. Though I know a lot of luck was involved in the good experience I had, I've no doubt that NH helped me hugely.

Prelabour - 48hours. Labour 6 hours. Hospital at 7cm, delivered 2.5 hours later. Gas and air, tens and breathing. Would do it again tomorrow.

Best of luck and keep listening even if you fall asleep, after all getting a nap's no bad thing anyway!!

tinky19 · 20/08/2011 14:53

Is it the purple looking book with CD by Maggie Howell?

nannyl · 20/08/2011 15:08

yes thats the one

i have just done it without falling asleep.... i think for about the 3rd or 4th time ever.
i finally feel like i know what the end says (by end i mean at least half the cd!!!)

lollystix · 20/08/2011 15:16

I did it with ds3- was a bit sceptical but I think it helped with the waterbirth - managed on just g&a- was much calmer although not pain free by any means. Just listened to it again last night as 31 weeks - bizarre as it all came flooding back. Weird as just generally if I'm feeling a bit tense I say inside my head 3,2,1 relax and then I do feel better. It is soooooo boring though.

MrsBloomingTroll · 20/08/2011 16:22

Have just used it for my second labour/birth and always fell asleep when listening pre-labour.

I was surprised both times how much I relied on the music. I was quite unsettled until the music started, then as soon as the CD played my breathing relaxed and contractions got stronger.

Definitely worth it!

tiddleypompom · 20/08/2011 18:17

I think the lady narrator should share the secret of the soporific voice - bedtime would be a cinch if only Peter Rabbit could be that tedious...

Anyone else struggle to think of an appropriate beach? I panicked through at least 5 mins when I should have been 3-2-1-ing trying to decide whether memory of north-west Scotland coast line was as generally chilled as south coast Fiji :o

nannyl · 20/08/2011 21:00

my beach is barbados Smile

my peaceful place(s) from pregnancy relaxation, are my old old old bosses holiday farm / my old old bosses garden, which has a private beach at the end!

soandsosmum · 21/08/2011 07:57

I used hypnobirthing (similar) and did a four session course omission using the cd and had a great birth. Like magnum said, not pain free but in control, and I would say comfortable.

I had 15 hours contractions to 5cm (most of which I slept through contractions using hypnobirthing even though they were quickly less than 5 mins apart) then 9 hours active labour, 10 mins in hospital before DD was born. I had a third degree year due to 'complex presentation' so was sewn up in theatre but really didn't feel a lot of pain and didn't take any pain killers apart from being sewn hpn think the relaxation really made it less painful and less stressful. Baby was born very calm, no problems, feeders well and her birth is the best thing I have ever done (3 months ago) in fact the day after she was born I was talking about number 2 :)

I wouldn't worry about talking asleep but would also use the cd at other times of day and consider a course as theres more good stuff as well as the relaxation such as fear release and affirmations.

minicorrect · 21/08/2011 08:13

I listened on the train to work for a good month. would stare out the window at the countryside rolling past and imagine my local beach. I suddenly looked forward T9 my commute! My birth was good until I turned my mp3 off too but would happily do it again.

KellyKettle · 23/08/2011 13:17

Thanks for this everyone.

So do you listen to it during the birth too (guilty of skim reading the booklet - sorry)?

I wondered whether I should just put it on my iPod and listen to it in labour rather than have it on the CD player on loop for all to hear.

Dont you get sick of it after 10 hours of labour?

OP posts:
MoonFaceMamaaaaargh · 23/08/2011 19:14

My beach is at night...ie dark...I'm not sure why that's just what came in to my head (prob because I am always falling asleep by that point Wink )

RockChick1984 · 23/08/2011 23:36

I used natal hypnotherapy, I found it didn't help with the actual labour, however it helped me to be calmer in the run up to labour. Once I was in the delivery suite I forgot I'd even been listening to it (although my labour was very quick, no break between contractions). I honestly think it must still sink in while you are asleep tho - you wake up when she tells you to so you are obviously hearing her subconsciously!
