Yes you can ask to have your gown on with the open at the front! They might say no and give you some 'protocol' but you can absolutely insist. I know many mums who have done so and our local hospital nows 'allows' it - for emergency ones as well as elected. You might need to be insistent about it though but there's no genuine reason why you can't. My advice would be to agree it with them in advance though so you're having the 'battle' just as you get ready. If you say it's because you're so keen for skin to skin and to help breastfeeding, it'll be hard for them to refuse you.

I've had 3 sections and gown open at the back each time for doing the spinal / epidural. I did have skin to skin immediately (i.e baby out, checked, handed to me) with both my electives (not following the emergency one, although is I hadn't been such a complete wreck at the time and incapable of holding the baby that would have been fine too - i.e. it wasn't because it was an emergency it was because of state I was in). The gown was really loose and they just pulled it down off one shoulder and tucked the baby in underneath to hold while i was being stitched up. It really wasn't difficult so I would worry about it. Just mention to the midwife / nurse in theatre before they start the operation that that is what you want and that is what will happen.
