Lochia, how long did yours last?

DD2 is 1 week old today and my Lochia has completely dried up. I know it could start up again, especially if I start doing things (but given the state of my pelvis thats not likely right now!), but I was wondering if anyone's did actually stop after a week? I remember it being about 3 weeks with DD1. I had a physiological third stage this time, anyone noticed that makes a difference?

If my lochia doesn't return I will be well chuffed, esp as getting to toilet is such a miltary operation right now

Hello, Pie. I had a physiological 3rd stage with my 4th baby but it didn't make any difference afterwards. I guess you must still be having the midwife in - what does she say? Hope you're feeling a bit brighter now, btw.

mw didn't seem remotely interested, but she is pretty daft, suggested I give baby formula to her on the third day as she had lost weight and was slightly jaundiced, and was decided unimpressed yesterday when baby had actually begun to put ON weight, apparently not enough.

BTW Feeling better thank you!

Did you notice a difference in afterpains with physiological 3rd sue? Very very bad this time, though I know they get worse each baby.

I'm hoping someone will say 'YES!! mine stopped after a week and didn't come back!'

LOL at the 'daft' mw!! Tis a pity new parents have to put up with so much bad information, though.

Afterpains; blumming agony - I remember writhing round on the bed with them going 'Ow, ow, ow'! I hadn't made the physio 3rd stage connection, I must admit, but I guess it could be a factor? I just assumed it was due to it being baby no4. I took paracetamol eventually as the afterpains plus my boobies feeling like they were on fire was just too much.

hi pie mine stopped after a week with my last child but it came back after a few days.
I found it a bit heavier.

As for after pains it does get worse after each one

Oakmaiden · 11/10/2003 11:50

To be honest as I recall evidence suggests that afterpains tend to be LESS after a physiological third stage (and greater after syntometrine, etc). But they do tend to get worse after every baby.

princesspeahead · 11/10/2003 11:58

hi pie, hope you are doing OK and enjoying lovely little pie-let
i had a phys 3rd stage as well and lost VERY little blood in childbirth (least my mw had seen). my lochia stopped completely after about a week for 3 or 4 days, then it was quite heavy and fresh blood for about 3 days, then settled down again and stopped completely at about 3 weeks.

still much quicker and less overall than my previous two (which weren't phys 3rd stages - don't know if that what was made the difference or not)

princesspeahead · 11/10/2003 11:59

ps didn't have bad afterpains at all - seem to remember them being much worse with number 2

pie · 11/10/2003 12:02

Guess I better go put that sanitary towel back on then

Another stop/start here too. Bad afterpains, physiological third stage with DS2.

Many congrats on the new baby! Managed to miss your birth announcement!

I was just about to ask this Pie, thanks! Although opposite worry (or more a moan), 6 weeks on and no sign of it stopping, is this normal?

You lot sound very lucky!!!! All three of my pregnancies ended with more than 8weeks of bleeding, but I had c-sections with all of them, after pains were more intense 2nd and 3rd time round, but I didn't suffer as long with the last. Maybe your body gets use to dealing with the pain. Question? please can someone explain the meaning of : physiological third stage? and Syntometrine? I'm baffled?

never had after pains till nimber three.

Bled forever - always affected by how much I was doing.

Survivor, a physiological third stage is when the placenta is left to deliver naturally and syntometrine is the drug they use to deliver the placenta (please someone correct me if I a wrong).
