Quickest Labour Stories? (Not a competition!)

I gave birth to DS2 on Monday morning after an almost frighteningly fast labour - 31 mins from waters breaking to actual birth. My delivery notes make me laugh, as stage 1 of my labour says 30 mins, and stage 2 (the actual pushing part) is classified as 1 minute!

We were very lucky to make it in time - I literally went into the delivery room and 2 minutes later baby was born, had we stopped at any red lights or if there had been traffic is would have been in the car or in the lift Shock

So...I wondered, how common is this sort of thing? I mean you couldn't plan for this at all, and I wonder what it means if I have any more...I'd have to move into hospital!

Also, not sure if this is significant, but I ate almost a whole a pineapple on Saturday night - saw the other pineapple thread, so the evidence is there even though I assumed it was an old wives' tale!

dd1 - 3 hours (though no pushing - out she popped - almost arrived before MW - could feel her in the u-bend ..)
ds - 5 hours (big little bugger)
DD2 - 3 hours (only 5 mins after waters went...)

i was born in 45 minutes, in the ladies loo, because my mum decided to go for a wee after the hospital told her 'go home, you aren't in labour' I don't know if this was a sign for things to come for me..

Malvapoeding · 23/06/2011 20:51

I was in the night before DD2 was born being monitored, MW examined me and said see you in 2 weeks for induction. Got home at 1am, had mild cramps but nothing more than the BH I had had for weeks. At 2.20 I had a big contraction, told DH I thought things were happening and we headed to the hospital expecting to be sent home - arrived at 2.40, took 20 mins to walk across the carpark DD2 was born at 3.10 - recorded labour was under 20 mins with stage 2 under a minute and stage 3 3 minutes!

clayre · 23/06/2011 20:56

Midnight - waters broke
12.45am - contractions started after i changed the sheets Confused
1.00am - decided i needed to go to hosp
1.25am - made it to hosp and nice lady let me in and told me to take a seat [shocked]
1.31am - baby born!

Then it took about 15 mins to push out the placenta!!!

As i had complications after my first labour and the second so fast i was warned if i had a third i would be hospitalsed at about 38 weeks!

mumatron · 23/06/2011 21:04

Dd2 was born 9 minutes after waters breaking.

I went into hospital expecting to be told I wasn't in real labour. The pains I was getting were very erratic and not much to the braxton hicks I'd been having for months before. From 1st pain to delivery was 3 hours and she was born in 1 push.

LunaticIsOnTheGrass · 23/06/2011 21:18

DS1 - 8hrs 10m. Think I may have slowed things down with the epidural & laying on my back though.

DS2 - 3hrs 51m. 1 minute 2nd stage, born in 2 pushes, stayed upright all the way through.

DD - 1hr 25m. 1 minute 2nd stage again, 3 pushes this time, also stayed upright this time though argued with the midwife as she was trying to make me lie down. She also told me that I would be a while yet when I was telling her that DDs head was about to come out.

Withwoman · 23/06/2011 21:26

Last baby (3rd) Waters went at 11pm. Had first contraction at about midnight. Contractions got regular enough to be consider labour at 3.15, had baby at 3.50. So my official labour time was 25 minutes with a 10 minute second stage. Which felt like forever, after my second child delivered in 3 pushes, one for the waters, one for the head and the next for the body. lol

Ds1 was 4 hours from first contraction to arrival
Ds2 was 2 hours from first contraction to arrival.

Both relatively low pain level labors too thankfully, with gas and air.

12 hours with my first although technically i was in early labour 2 days prior to that. Does that mean it might be a lot quicker this time round, any chance i'll be done after 31 minutes, god i hope so, at least i have hope lol

kindlekid · 27/06/2011 16:40

DD1 - about 4 hours from first twinge. From 2cm dilated to delivery in 30 minutes.

DD2 - under 2 hours from first twinge.

Contemplating have a third but the speed of my labours is a concern. Nearly an hour from nearest hospital and homebirth not an option.

That's so interesting, SecondComing - do you have any idea why it took longer (baby's position etc..)?
Nice of them to say you could take your kids in with you, so they must have equally expected a super quick birth (see, I am almost planning my 3rd pg already..!].

DS2 was to be an induction as he was measuring quite big so it was all very monitored. Had 30 mins on the machine that makes it sound like a galloping horse (what is that called?) and then the midwife examined me, I wasn't contracting at all but she thought she had enough room to slip the crochet hook thingy in (can you tell I'm a medical professional with all this jargon). The dr wanted me to have syntocin from the off but I was very anti so she gave me one hour to see if I progressed. 40 mins later I was 10 cm and he came out in two pushes. Dr came in with the syntocin and a drip set quietly said congratulations and walked straight out again! (he was 8lb 11 btw so not massive)

Another one who thought DS3 would be a sneeze in Tesco and done but I could have read war and peace during that labour (9lb 10, mostly head!)

thats true about third labours, with my ds3 my waters broke and i got to 5cm and labour stalled and stopped for ages, dr wanted to set up drip etc, but midwife said NO she is just tired and tucked me up in bed, lights off etc and i got a couple of hours sleep, then woke at 2am with mild contractions and he was born by 5am. so three hours of proper labour..

ds1 took THREE days, ds2 7hrs, ds3 hrs and then ds4 was less than an hour, they broke my waters, nothing happend then started getting contractions, stood up and another big gush of waters and major contractions midwife looked at mea nd said lets get you in the pool, and less than 40mins later he was born, i didnt even push, was frantically breathing the gas and air and he shot out 10lb 13oz!

dd took just under 3hrs but after waters went no contractions had to have the syntocin, they recomended an epidural and i said oh no it will be fine, OMG the pain, she was back to back and still delivered in less than three hours with three pushes, they said had she not been back to back she would have been very quick.

i am done now, 5 labours is more than enough thankyou very much!

it was ok, my best labour by far, thank fuck for gas and air tho Grin

Mizza76 · 28/06/2011 09:55

My mother gave birth to my brother half an hour after she was induced. My father almost didn't make it. The doctor told her that next time she gave birth they would have to put a net at the end of the bed to catch the baby :-)

My cousin, meanwhile, ended up giving birth in her car in the hospital carpark. Actually it wasn't even her hospital - they drove to one that was even closer, but even then didn't make it indoors. The family joke was that it wasn't her car either - it was a company car Grin

jezebelle · 28/06/2011 12:39

Dd, first baby, was 45 mins from losing plug to birth !!

ohbabybaby · 28/06/2011 12:40

Official length of established labours:
DS1 - 28 hours (and dragged out in the end)
DS2 - 11 mins

So hope for you yet babyonboard.

admittedly that is 'established' labour, had 11 hours of very mild easy to manage pains (not worse than BHs) before for DS2 (though add another 20 hours for DS1 if we are talking non established labour too!).

sb6699 · 28/06/2011 13:03

DS1 - 28 hours start to finish
DD1 - about 45 mins
DD2 - 30 minutes (no established labour - my waters broke and she literally popped out after the midwife telling me I had a while to go and left us alone. Stunned DH had to catch the baby and use his foot to wedge open the room door to holler for help!).

sb6699 · 28/06/2011 13:03

Oh, and all were very straight forward. No pain relief for second two either as there was no time.

Glitterybits · 29/06/2011 21:41

Oh I am so jealous reading some of these stories. DS took five days from start of contractions/ show to being born. I eventually gave in through tiredness and went into hospital after 3 nights of hideously painful, but seemingly not very effective on/off contractions just so I could have some answers and be with someone rather than go it alone all night in pain on my own again. I had basically dilated a cm a day and was only 4cm when admitted. I then had to have my waters broken - hind and fore and the little bugger still took two hours to push out. Hoping DD1 will be a little speedier, although perhaps not quite so speedy as some of the stories here!
