Big tip for healing perineal scars!!!

I know there have been dozens of threads suggesting lavender oil, letting air to the area, patting dry and all the other usual ideas, BUT...

I went to see my gynae surgeon yesterday. 9 months ago I required a full 3a degree restitch after my daughter was born last May (first birthday on Friday n'aww, anyway I digress...). I went back because my perineum, despite fully healed, was occasionally sore and irritated. She advised, and yes I said "OMG" too, but to go for a full brazilian wax!

Any scar will be irritated or indurated if hairs are in the way, they will cause ingrowns which in their own way will cause inflammation and potentially infection, in the worst case scenario causing the scar to open up. She said (and I trust her with my life as she is Lead Directing Consultant of one of the UK's largest tertiary referral unit for gynae issues), all women are obviously different in regard to pubic hair but to make sure the area is as hair free as possible to allow scar tissue to heal as best it can without other irritations.

So ladies, I've had several Californians in the year my daughter's been born, but tomorrow I'm going the whole hog!...

Very interesting thanks for this! I always have brazilians and I had my first one just before DS1 was born and said it was the best thing I could have done - so much cleaner etc. when you're trying to heal the area. I recommend it all the time but nice to have a medical reason to back it up!

I didn't have a Brazilian and I healed fine. I see what she means about potential inflammation though. Maybe i would've if i'd thought about this!

Glad to hear you're on the mend.

Pip - can I ask whether waxing over your perineal scar was particularly more painful postnatal? I had brazilians for years pre-dd which were yes uncomfortable but bearable. I've change my appt for a wax to later today and just a tad nervous about the scar despite gynae dr advising this!

Can I ask - don't you get more ingrown hairs after a wax? I would love to get it done but am scared of the regrowth.

First probably too late for the answer now as you'll have had your appointment but I didn't notice anything at all but then I only had a tiny tear that wasn't even stitched.

Samvet more ingrown hairs as opposed to what other method? If shaving then no. As long as you exfoliate regularly, moisturise and if necessary use something like tendskin regularly then I very, very rarely get an ingrown hair.
