Which method of delivery following placental abruption in previous pregnancy?

Hi, My DD1 is 21mths and I'm 31wks pregnant with DD2. DD1 was born on her due date, I think the abruption started labour as i was in constant pain from the start, the bleeding was internal and the abruption wasn't diagnosed until it was too late for a section. DD1 was basically still-born with an apgar score of 0-0-0. After 20min of resus' a faint pulse was detected and she was taken to a larger hospital for the newborn cooling treatment. DD1 has severe CP as a result of oxygen starvation at birth, physically she is very effected although cognitively she is absolutely fine. She is an absolute joy.
I'm just wondering what types of deliveries others have had when they've had an abruption in a previous pregnancy? There was no identified cause in my case (no accident/smoking/ drugs etc), and I'm having scans every 4weeks to monitor the arteries to placenta and fetal growth- all fine so far. However I've seen different consultants who advise everything from planned section through to sweeps starting at 38weeks and feeling confused and abit anxious as to what is best. Thanks for reading

Oh, you poor thing to go through that. I'm afraid I have no advice at all. I think if it was me though, I'd be opting for the control freak method and asking for a section.

I think this must surely be an understatement? 'feeling confused and abit anxious'!

I'd be starting off, probably, by asking to see one consultant who will have overall care for you and then take it from there.

Hi there, am so sorry to hear about your first delivery - how very scary. I too had a placental abruption with DC as I went into labour. Very painful from the start and lots of bleeding. I was very lucky, it was spotted relatively early and i was rushed into theatre for a section.
Am shortly having my second and wanted to avoid any chance of it happening again so am booked in for an elective section.
Like you there was no identified cause in my case. Age is sometimes a factor though (was 35 when DC1 born). Risk of it happening again was given at about 10%.
I can't of course say what is best but knowing there's no chance of that particular thing happening again has meant that I have been really relaxed during this pregnancy.

Sorry can't advise about best method of delivery but just wanted to wish you all the best for the birth of your DD2. I also had an abruption at 39 weeks with DD which was the most frightening thing ever - she is also affected physically as a result of her birth.

Doctors did say to me that if I ever wanted to get pregnant again they would definitely advise an early section just to be on the safe side. I really hope all goes well for you..

Hi, am really sory to hear about the awful time you had with your first delivery. Just wanted to mention that I had an abruption at 39 weeks with my son (who is now 22). The bleeding was external and there was no pain - it happened in the night and I thought my waters had gone as I just felt wet, it was a shock to find a pool of blood. I ended up having an emegency C section as his heart rate dropped rapidly. I went on to have my next child with a normal delivery and he was 10lbs, I was quite worried about this but it was fine. Obviously things have changed a lot since - but I would stress that you should make your wishes known and hopefully you will get a good consultant. Thinking of you - the very best of luck xx
