I'm due in 4 weeks and trying to get things organised. I'm planning to download music onto the ipod for labour but have hit a total mental block and don't know what to put on!!

I know it depends on individual tastes but what did you/would you listen to during labour?

Push it by Salt n Pepa??

mrspink27 · 08/11/2005 19:31

I listened to David Gray, Sting, George Michael and some classical compilations oh and Robbie Willimas Swing when you're winning!

Skyler · 08/11/2005 19:31

Lol Pagan.
I was advised not to put your fave songs on as next time you listen to them you will only remember your birth experience.
DH put on some relaxing classical music CD's with dd1 but I didn't even notice them until she was born. We had the radio on for dd2 and that was great for taking my mind off things.

ds was born to "Every little thing she does is magic" and it does bring back memories. But ds had a good birth really, even though he was an emergency c-section. The theatre crew chose the music - I think it might have been the radio, so I'm glad it was a good song! With dd we took lots of ambient music, and I can remember listening to "A man in a room gambling" (Gavin Bryers) in early stages. By the time it started to go wrong, if there was any music still going I really can't remember! I think it's good to take music to relax to, and music to work to, oh and music that will sound OK with the acoustics of the labour room too.

Christ,I'd have had a seizure if Sting had been yodelling when I was giving birth!

Preferred peace...
(Actually I would prefer a pneumatic drill to the Smug One.)

Don't have 'Torn' by Natalie Imbruglia ouch ! Sorry couldn't resist.
I took a tape player in & it never made it out of my bag !

Maybe you should get a selection with different themes - ie upbeat music with vocals, some rock music, classical music, meaningful music for you, ambient music, and have the radio as a back-up?
I don't think you know how you are going to feel and how you are going to labour, so you might find that you want different sorts of things at different stages. I know I would have found the radio or anything that was a sing-along favourite would have jarred me and distracted me from relaxing, but I have heard of other people 'dancing' and singing and really getting something out of this sort of music.
I had all my labour in silence so dh and midwife had to put up to listening to me counting 'one two three' over and over for 8 hours.

Give yourself options for on the day so you can see how you feel.

This won't help but I started my labour with DH watching UKGold in the delivery room and it wasn't even anything good - DADS ARMY !! (To be fair to DH I was on my third day of induction by then adn nothing was really happening). My actual delivery was emergency cs so wasn't asked and the radio was on but I could not tell you any of the songs that were played. But I am sure if I see an episode of Dad's Army again it will bring back memories......

Don't stop me now - Queen has made me cry almost every time I've heard it through this pg and I have this little fantasy that DS will be born to it - sad but true

iris66 · 09/11/2005 10:41

In dact even thinking about it has made me go all emotional - perhaps it's not a good idea after all!!

Redhelen · 09/11/2005 19:02

Rock music - especially born to be wild!!!

Wanted to be very mobile and loud!!!

Redhelen · 09/11/2005 19:04

I think there are some good ideas to make our own mn album for birthing - make a fortune no doubt!!

HuggyBear · 09/11/2005 19:04

LOL Iris snap - i bought queens album for when i was having ds2 (forgot it though)

morningpaper · 09/11/2005 19:05

We listened to the World Service and watched a television programme on soil erosion in Plymouth.

How the time flew by.

I had all this hypnotherapy music lined up, but as a last minute thing I packed in my Keane CD before I left for hospital and that was all I listened to! Now I have lovely memories (I did not have such a bad labour!) whenever I play that CD - it will always be special to me!

kateandfelicity · 10/11/2005 13:33

where are the drugs???? why isn't the epidural working aaarrggghhh.... followed by waa waa waa waa waa waa ....

kateandfelicity · 10/11/2005 13:34

sounds liek the verve, "the drugs don't work" hehehehehehe

Em32 · 10/11/2005 13:52

I thought this was a joke to start with! Didn't listen to anything, there wasn't time either time and anyway I wouldn't have noticed what music was on, who was in the room etc etc so could be anything really!

Lonelymum · 10/11/2005 13:55

Labour's last piece of music was Things Can Only Get Better....

For women in labour, I think that is quite relevant!

dizietsma · 10/11/2005 14:15

Spiritchaser by Dead Can Dance was fantastic labour music for me, allowed me to concentrate inwards. Very pretty music too.
