Can anyone recommend a decent sized mattress protector? We just got a new mattress a couple of months ago and don't want to ruin it by my waters breaking in bed. I've looked in chemists but they only seem to have tiny little things (60cm x 60cm) about the same size as a puppy training pad and they just seem too small! I think my best bet is to go for something that would cover a double mattress as I tend to sprawl out all over the bed :o

Dunelm have really cheap ones

Melly19MummyToBe · 04/05/2011 15:05

Aaah yes, but it's a new mattress, so I'm expecting it. If we still had the old one I could guarantee it wouldn't happen :o

Why would it be unusual?

Oh I see, but everybodys different though aren't they? I just want to be covered for every possibility! Including getting the small ones from the chemist for the car and settee :o

I bought a couple of heavy duty dust covers from Homebase.
They have plastic underneath but a sort of twill fabric on top so not all sweaty.

Two for about 15 quid or you can get a huge one and cut it up.
I put one on a week or so before EDD and used the other one for a few weeks afterwards.
I have done this twice and its worked really well.

My mattress is spotless after two homebirths Smile

Mine broke on the bed both times, first time I'd just climbed in to wake DP to tell him I was in labour, second time I was in the process of climbing in to wake DP to tell him I was in labour...

I got some from BHS. They are waterproof but not crinkly.

Melly19MummyToBe · 04/05/2011 15:42

Oh dear Knofje! Although, why did you need to climb in? I would've just gone to his side of the bed to shake him awake! I find climbing into bed is too much like hard work now. Just like turning over in bed, and getting out of bed. Oh, and getting comfy in bed, and sleeping! Basically, anything to do with bed is too much like hard work now. Which is a shame, as I love bed.

He's a very heavy sleeper and I was having pretty heavy contractions. Were I am beds are raised to (IIRC) 80-90cm for home births, no way could I have managed without the climbing!

Oh I see now! Guess you didn't have a choice then :o

I had an old-fashioned 'bedwetting' type mattress protector courtesy of my mum, and was very grateful for it when my waters broke in bed - and yes it was a huge big pop and lots of gushing, the mattress would have been ruined. This time around I'm using one of the cot protectors we had in DD's cot as it's hotter weather (DD1 born in October whereas I'm due next week with DD2) and I'll get really sweaty if I use the original one. I've got them from www.thenappylady.co.uk, but it's only worth it if you want them for the cot anyway as they're relatively expensive.

Also the nappy lady ones came in handy first time round to stop my milk leaking all over the mattress (very leaky boobs, me!).

Here is the link to the nappy lady bed protector. Yep, more expensive, but really, really good.

Like Zimbah i had an old fashioned bed wetting protector thingy, and my waters did go with an pop and gushed whilst in bed.
