Early C-section

Hi ya'll

I'm currently recovering from a rather traumatic eptopic pregnancy that left some damage to the top corner of my womb. The docs have advised that when we do get pregnant again I'll have to come in early for a c-sec. They say approx 3-7wks depending on how well my body is coping.

Questions I am asking myself:

  1. The moral implications of bring a baby into the world early. Would I be a selfish cow to do this?
  2. Is there a chance I can swing the distance and have a natural birth?

I would love some advice or comfort form an experianced mother.

I'm sorry to hear you've had a rough time. I don't think anyone can answer specifically because it'll all depend on your individual medical situation and how your next pregnancy progresses. As far as a moral stance goes, I fail to see where "selfish cow" fits at all, and think that all you can do listen to expert advice when the time comes. Perhaps the only place morality might come into it is if you were to ignore expert medical opinion. Very best of luck.

Can't help with everything you ask sorry.
However my son came naturally 4 weeks early and was a healthy weight and well for gestation age. Of course I can't say the same will apply for you it will all depend but I am sure they will monitor you throughout and keep you informed when the time comes.

I agree with PP I don't think "selfish cow" comes into it at all.

Also give yourself time to come to terms with what has happened it sounds like it is still early days.

As for chances of natural birth, this will all be discussed with you I am sure when you are pregnant again and see the Consultant (which I am guessing you will be under one due to your history).

Thanks guys. I'm just so worried about the possible issues premmies can have that I worry I'd be being selfish to want to bring a baby into the world with a strong risk of it being premature.

I don't think selfish is the word either. You say that you could go to 3 weeks before your due date - that is technically full term. None of us know when our babies will be born (I know of 2 babies born at 29 weeks in the last couple of months, both doing great) it's just that you know beforehand that you have more likelihood of the baby coming early. And doctors can often be wrong when it comes to babies anyway - nobody knows how your body will react in late pregnancy until you get there.

I suppose I could be said to have brought a baby into the world with a strong risk of it being premature: my first pregnancy was induced early due to IUGR and I knew there was a strong risk in second pregnancy too: ds was born in week 36 following induction. He was fine, no harm done.

Thanks guys - this does make me feel better. It's comforting to know that there are some early birds doing well.

I think seeing photos of my friend's son in an incubator 7wks early has freaked me out a bit even though he seems to be thriving now. I think my recent bad luck has left me feeling a little cursed!
