Has anyone VBAC'd a big baby?

Am currently 36 weeks pregnant with dd2, and have been feeling very big for weeks, my bump is huge, my stomach feels like a collection of body parts, that I can actually grab!

DD1 was 8.7lb and by my dates was 4 days early, but doctors went by my scan and induced me and needless to say ended up in emcs, with dd in an op position and her head stuck.

Throughout this pregnancy I have been determined on a vbac, as I hated the recovery of a section, and will have a toddler and baby to look after this time around.

Had a consultants appointment a few days ago where I mentioned I thought baby felt quite large, and she sent me for a growth scan. The scan came back that the baby is 8 pound and a few oz now, head centile and stomach off the charts, and already going into a op position. I now have to go back at 39 weeks to see if I am favourable for vbac, and what the babies growth is like.

I am still hoping for a vbac, and would like to know if there's anyone who has successfully vbac'd a large baby with minimal problems. Obviously I would not like a vbac at all costs, and another long difficult labour with an emcs would be the worst outcome for me.

Yes i vbac with DD. She was back to back too, and was 10lb 2oz.

I did have a 3rd degree tear with her, but i firmly believe that it was caused by me being made to lie down constantly for monitoring and not being able to move about.

I then went on to have another vbac with DS3, who weighed just under 10lbs.

Thanks deemented,

Did they pick up that your babies were big before you went into labour? Was the tear easier to recover from than the section you had previous?

I've already got the consultant to agree to the hand held monitor as being stuck on a bed was one of the factors leading to section last time, they seem to be bending over backwards to get the section rates down in our area.

Yes, they knew DD was going to be big - at 37 weeks i was measuring 45 weeks!!

The tear was very very uncomfortable, and i had a toddler to run round after as well. But i think it was easier than a csection as i was able to drive, pick up baby easily.. i just couldn't sit down well Smile

Good luck!

I had a vbac with DS who was 9lbs 12oz. My first baby was 8lbs 13oz, was back to back, and after a really long labour I had a EMCS at 10cm as she was totally stuck (so similar story to you). DS's labour was much more straightforward though I did have a ventouse delivery - he was also back to back (reckon I wouldn't have needed the ventouse if he'd been positioned better). I had an episiotomy with the ventouse, and stitches after but still much easier recovery than after the EMCS and emotionally I felt loads better. Of course the easiest recovery was with my third birth (2nd VBAC) - 7lbs 8oz who arrived calmly and easily without a single tear and no intervention other than an epidural.

With DS I suspected he would be big and they wanted to give me a growth scan but I declined, as I'd already decided I wanted to try for a VBAC and was worried that they'd use the scan against me.

Hope it all goes well for you :)
