Bloodstained waters

When I gave birth for the second time a few weeks ago, the Midwife had to break my waters, and she had to consult a Doctor afterwards because she said they were 'bloodstained'.
Does anyone know what can be the reason behind this? I was too spaced out from the pain relief at the time to bother asking, and it's something I've wondered about since...

Can't help with why,but had blood when giving birth to second child and frightened the living daylights out of me.It was never explained as to why there was so much blood and my waters broke maturally as far as I know.Would also love an answer to this so hope that someone can help.

Neen - Must come from the placenta. Sometimes it is a sign of placenta abruption where the placenta is detaching from the uterus wall....

Singingmum - When the baby comes out it is often quite bloody! That's not abnormal... or maybe you had a bit of a hemmorage which is again mightb be coming from the placenta.

Blood loss often looks worst than it is but it can be very scary!

neen99 - sometimes the waters can look pretty bloodstained but it can infact just be blood from the dilating cervix mixed with it.
Very blood stained liquor can be a sign of an abrupting placenta as pupuce described, but the baby would show signs of distress if it was severe.
