Shaving pre elcs- what to use?

I'm having my elcs on fri and was told by the mw at my pre-op appointment that they like you to shave that area yourself. Well that's all very good but I can't bloody see it!
So do I use my regular razor and risk cuts/ nicks etc but get a smooth result (although I will get itchy regrowth as I always do I I shave bikini line)?
Or use dh's clippers so that I don't cut myself but there will be very minor stubble (I'm guessing the regrowth won't be so bad as it's not so close to skin)?

What do you think is the best plan?

Can't use hair removal cream as I'm allergic and won't be waxing that large an area!

Can you go to a salon for a wax? It Stings but is better for after.
You need to take down to the crack. !
If you leave stubble they will shave it smooth in theatre anyway.
So Getting waxed means you don't have to do it in the morning of.
Beauticians will have had wierder wackier shapes and requests!

i used a regular razor and propped a mirror up to see what i was doing.

you don't need to shave the whole lot off, just enough so they can make a smooth cut, just over an inch should do it.

MayDayChild · 16/04/2011 20:24

I waxed to the crack and they still shaved more!

soppypreggyloon · 16/04/2011 20:27

No I asked how much and they said an inch to inch and a half. Thill be going through scar of emcs apparently so they have a nice straight line at the top of my bikini line to work on.

I can not wax it as I am so sensitive to waxing pain I've been unable to tidy my bikini line since pre-Christmas! Blush

i suppose it depends on the surgeon and what type of stitches he/she wants to use.

i shaved what i thought to be enough off and it was left as i had done it.

I am curious about this as I will likely have an ELCS for DC2 but had an EMCS for DC1 and I am not 100% sure but don't think they shaved me and the scar is about an inch above where the hair starts anyway - does that mean I just happen to have a low "hairline" and therefore won't need to deal with it?

ilovesprouts · 16/04/2011 20:30

i dint do mine as i had failed induction and the nurse did it bloody dry shave as well Shock

Chynah · 16/04/2011 21:43

Both times I shaved about 1/2 to 1 inch off the top - well actually got hubby to do it. The midwife checked it before I went to surgery and decided it was enough. (my hairline is low and my scar runs along the top of it) No itchy regrowth.

DH has already be warned that it's his job! Makes him laugh but in a nice way. Oh and he'd better not make silly patterns!

I hadn't been shaved for my EMCS and haven't read anything about shaving in the leaflet they gave me for preparation for my ELCS next month.

Looking at various cochrane reviews, it seems that there is actually no evidence that shaving is of any benefit, but actually can even increase the incidence of infection.

peanutbutterontoast · 18/04/2011 19:25

WidowWadman they tell us not to shave here because they've found it increases the risk of infection (5 c-sections never shaved).
